The Youngstown State baseball team rallied late in game two to earn a doubleheader split against Baylor on Saturday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
The Bears scored the final seven runs of game one to pick up a 12-5 victory before the Penguins rallied from a 5-4 ninth-inning deficit to win 7-5 in 10 innings in game two.
The Penguins and Bears are both 3-8 overall on the season following Saturday's results. YSU took a 2-1 lead in the weekend series after winning the series opener 7-5 on Friday night.
Game 1 Recap
Baylor scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie and earn a 12-5 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
The Bears scored once in the first inning before the Penguins tied it with a single run in the fourth. Baylor scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth to a build a 5-1 lead before YSU struck twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to tie the game 5-5. The Bears exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away and even the series at a game apiece.
Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while Turner Grau tripled, walked and scored two runs. Andre Good and Steven D'Eusanio each doubled and scored a run while Ian Francis singled and drove in a run.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed five runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision. Trey Pancake allowed one hit and struck out two batters over 1.1 scoreless innings in his first collegiate pitching appearance. Kenny Misik suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and striking out three batters over 1.1 innings. Casey Marshalwitz was responsible for five runs on two hits in one third of an inning.
The Bears jumped in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Kolby Branch was hit by a pitch and scored from first on a two-out RBI double from Kobe Andrade.
The Penguins evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Grau drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Padraig O'Shaughnessy.
Baylor regained a 2-1 lead with one run on two hits in the home half of the fourth inning. Gavin Brzozowski and Will Pendergrass hit back-to-back singles to begin the frame, and both runners advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Mazoch. After Walker Polk was hit by a pitch, Austin Stracener drove home Brzozowski with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bears pushed their lead to 5-1 with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrade drew a one-out walk and Pendergrass followed with a two-out single to set up a three-run home run down the right field line by Mazoch.
Youngstown State cut Baylor's lead to 5-3 with two runs on one hit and two errors in the top of the seventh inning. Matt Thompson reached on an error before Good doubled to left center field. Francis drove in Thompson with an RBI groundout and Good scored on an error after stealing third base.
The Penguins tied the game at 5-5 with two runs on three hits in the top of the eighth inning. Grau hit a leadoff triple to left center and Braeden O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI single to center field. Later in the frame, D'Eusanio doubled and came around to score when Padraig O'Shaughnessy reached on a throwing error.
Baylor went back in front 12-5 with seven runs on three hits in the home half of the eighth inning. Mazoch drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk before pinch hitter John Ceccoli delivered a two-run single to left center. After Stracener walked to load the bases again, Branch hit a grand slam down the left field line.
Baylor starter Mason Marriott allowed three unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings of work. Andrew Petrowski was awarded the victory after surrendering two runs, one of them earned, on three hits over two innings of relief.
Game 2 Recap
The Youngstown State baseball team scored once in the ninth and twice in the 10th to rally for a 7-5 extra-inning victory over Baylor in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
Trailing 5-4, YSU rallied in the top of the ninth as Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when his brother Padraig O'Shaughnessy delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to even the score 5-5.
Good led off the top of the 10th inning with a double and Eddie Saucedo followed with a single to set up a one-out RBI single by Trey Law that give the Penguins a 6-5 advantage. Grau then brought home pinch runner RJ Sherwood with a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.
Freshman right-hander Aidan English worked around a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the 10th to get the game-clinching strikeout and earn his first-career victory. The North Lima, Ohio, native did not allow a hit over a career-high three innings of relief in just his second collegiate appearance. English retired the side in order in the eighth inning.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs while Law went 3-for-5 with a double and the go-ahead RBI single. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored while Good was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Eli Brown set a new career high with two hits as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. The Penguins tied their season high with 15 hits as they outhit the Bears 15-5.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos was responsible for one run on three hits with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings before being forced to leave the game due to injury. The sophomore right-hander retired the first six batters he faced. Zach Stayduhar recorded the final out of the fifth before giving way to Will Shaffer who allowed three runs on two hits in one inning of work. Cam Marshalwitz was charged with one unearned run during his one inning on the mound.
The Penguins struck first with two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Grau and Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit back-to-back one-out singles and both scored on a two-out, two-run single by Padraig O'Shaughnessy to give YSU a 2-0 lead.
Youngstown State pushed its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third when D'Eusanio hit a one-out double and Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI double down the right field line.
Baylor got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cole Posey hit a two-out solo home run to left field.
The Penguins increased their lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth when Good hit a leadoff double and Brown brought him home with a one-out RBI single to right field.
The Bears responded in the home half of the inning by scoring three runs on two hits to tie the game at 4-4. Hunter Teplanszky hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Simmons before Will Pendergrass hit a two-run single to even the score.
Baylor took its first lead of the game with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Branch drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored when Teplanszky reached on an error to give the bears a 5-4 edge.
Posey went 2-for-4 with a home run to pace the Bears offensively.
Baylor starter Cam Caley allowed four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts over five innings. Matheson was responsible for one run on two hits with five punch-outs over 3.1 innings of relief. Oliver was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
