The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team will return to the road for a Sunday non-conference tilt against Canisius in Buffalo. N.Y.
First draw is set for noon at the Demske Sports Complex. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
Scouting Canisius
The Golden Griffins are coming off a 12-5 victory over Mid-American Conference member Robert Morris that improved their overall record to 4-2. They also earned victories over St. Bonaventure, Stetson, and MAC member Detroit Mercy while they were defeated by Pittsburgh and Lafeyette.
The Penguins hosted Canisius on March 19, 2022. The Golden Griffins defeated YSU by a 12-9 margin.
Canisius' 2023 scoring effort has been led by Paige Stachura with 21 goals across the team's first six games. Skylar McArthur (17) and Caroline Netti (14) have also scored in double digits.
Goalkeeper Jody Chu has made 54 saves while giving up 53 goals on the season for a .505 save percentage.
The Golden Griffins are led by head coach Russell Allen who is in his second season with the team. He led the team to a 10-6 overall record in 2022, including a 5-3 record in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference.
By the Numbers
- Natalie Calandra-Ryan leads the Penguins in goals scored (27), assists (12), points (39), and draw controls (50). She is tied for first in caused turnovers with defender Aryss Lindsey, forcing 12.
- Erin Clark (15), Sydney Bumstead (12), Ali Korin (10), and Ally Garrett (10) have also scored in double digits for the Penguins. Clark is second on the team in assists (8), points (23), and draw controls (20).
- Jordan Miller (6), Abby Yesko (3), Molly Sheridan (2), and Shannyn Cullen (2) have also found the back of the net multiple times in 2023.
- Goalkeeper Mikaela Staranko has been the starting goalie in all seven games this season, making 59 saves on 198 shots faced in over 300 minutes of play, recording a .362 save percentage.
- Redshirt-freshman goalie Jacqueline Cornell has also seen time in the cage across the Guins' most recent two games, making 10 saves on 42 shots faced in just over 80 minutes of play, recording a .294 save percentage.
Offensive Awards
Two Penguins have been named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2023: Erin Clark and Natalie Calandra-Ryan.
Calandra-Ryan earned the award on March 7 after impressive performances against Niagara and No. 3 Northwestern, scoring four goals, netting nine draw controls, and grabbing two ground balls across both games.
Clark earned this season's first Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her all-around impressive offensive performance against Butler in the Guins' season-opener, delivering a seven-point performance and scoring the game-winning goal.
Last Time Out
The Penguins defeated Gardner-Webb, 21-18, at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Tuesday, delivering an impressive offensive performance to improve to 2-5 on the season.
Natalie Calandra-Ryan led the Penguins with seven goals to complete a day for the record books. She tallied 13 draw controls, the highest single-game total in program history. She also tied the program record for assists and points with five and 12, respectively. In addition, she led the Penguins with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Erin Clark recorded five goals on six shots while Ali Korin and Ally Garrett also delivered hat tricks with three goals apiece. Sydney Bumstead found the back of the net twice while Jordan Miller scored once for the Penguins.
Youngstown State recorded season-highs in goals scored (21), points (30), shots (38), and draw controls (25).
Goalies Mikaela Staranko and Jacqueline Cornell each played a half for the Penguins with Staranko making two saves and Cornell adding one.
Penguins Picked Fourth
YSU was selected fourth in the 2023 Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 31 points.
