Jocelyn Jourdan had 5.5 points in the fifth set to help the Youngstown State volleyball team rally for a 3-2 victory over IUPUI on Friday night at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-18, 11-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12.
Jourdan finished with a team-high 13 kills, and two of her three blocks came in the fifth set. The Penguins finished with 12 blocks as a team, eight of which came over the final two sets. YSU also had 11 aces in a match where 42 points were decided by aces or serving errors.
Jourdan was the lone Penguin to reach double digits in kills, and Abbie Householder was next in line with nine. Josi Borum posted a double-double of 21 assists and 19 digs, and Isidora Sisic recorded a match-high four aces.
Briana Brown had 15 kills and 11 digs to lead the Jaguars.
Youngstown State hit .343 and had six aces in the opening set to win handily 25-18, but the Penguins got off track in the second set and fell 25-11. IUPUI fought through seven ties and three lead changes to take the third set 25-21, and the Jaguars held a 21-18 lead in the fourth when YSU began its charge.
Householder had kills on back-to-back attempts to force an IUPUI timeout, and Jourdan teamed up with Dayan Malave for a block to tie the score at 21. IUPUI followed with a block to regain the lead, but another Householder kill sparked a four-point run to end the set for the Penguins. Maria Insana's serve clipped the top of the tape and landed for an ace, and Julia Sell had a big solo block of Morgan Ostrowski to force set point. Jourdan then followed with a kill to send the match to the fifth set.
There were six ties and five lead changes in the fifth set, and IUPUI held three-point leads of 9-6 and 11-8 before YSU ended the night on a 7-1 run. After the Jaguars took their 11-8 advantage, Borum had a kill and Malave and Sell had solo blocks on consecutive points to know the score at 11. Jourdan then had a kill out of a timeout to give YSU its first lead since 4-3, and the freshman ended up factoring in on five of the final six points of the match. After Maia Long's kill for IUPUI tied the score for IUPU, Jourdan had back-to-back kills to set up match point, and she teamed up with Malave for a block to finish off the rally.
Youngstown State outhit IUPUI .343-.132 in the opening set and .389-.043 in the fifth.
The Penguins will go for the weekend sweep on Saturday when they host Purdue Fort Wayne at 4 p.m.
