Guins Go 4-1, Marx Captures Individual Title on Record-Breaking Day in Wisconsin

Senior Madyson Marx became the Youngstown State bowling team's third MVP in as many tournaments, and the Penguins earned two more victories against top-five ranked opponents on Saturday at the SFA Ladyjack Invitational.
Marx recorded a five-game set of 1,144 to win the individual title by seven pins. She broke school records for the highest five-game set and tournament average at 228.80, topping both marks that she previously held from last season's Big Red Invitational.
Marx wasn't the only outstanding individual on the Penguins' roster on Saturday. She was joined on the all-tournament team by junior Madison Doseck, who finished fifth with a 1,075 set.
Marx, a fourth-year senior from Maplewood, Minn., shot between 213 and 268 in all five games. Doseck, a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, was between 195 and 236 in each game.
"The ladies did a heck of a job navigating pair-to-pair and communicating to stay ahead of the moves today," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "There are lots of positives to build from heading into tomorrow. We are excited to continue elevating our togetherness and have our eyes on finishing strong."
Before Marx's MVP at the SFA Ladyjack Invitational, Kirsten Moore was the MVP of the season-opening Penguin Classic, and Jade Cote was the MVP at Destination Orlando.
Youngstown State went 4-1 in its five head-to-head matches on Saturday as the tournament shifted to traditional play. That brings the Penguins' record to 8-2 at the tournament held at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.
YSU began the morning with a 1,070-942 win over No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, and its only loss of the day came to No. 7 Jacksonville State, 1,130-917. YSU bounced back with a 1,036-904 win over Aurora, and the Penguins posted their second top-five win in match four with a 1,068-980 victory over No. 3 Nebraska. YSU closed out the session with a 950-749 win over Carthage.
The Penguins shot 5,041 as a team on Saturday to qualify fifth for the best-of-seven bracket play portion of the tournament on Sunday. With its combined total from Friday's Baker play, YSU finished 42 pins behind Vanderbilt for a spot in the top four. Maryville, which will be Youngstown State's first opponent on Sunday, qualified sixth.
YSU's three matches on Sunday will begin at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.
