Madison, Wisc. - Led by the men's highest regional finish in program history and Hunter Christopher's school-record run, the Youngstown State men's and women's cross country programs ran impressive races at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday.
The men's squad finished ninth overall out of 30 teams to earn the best regional finish in program history. This marks the first time the Penguins have finished in the top-10 teams in the Great Lakes as YSU placed ahead of all Ohio teams.
Christopher clocked a time of 30:23.9 in the men's 10k to break the previous school record by over 30 seconds. Christopher's impressive time earned him the 26th individual spot in the region.
Ryan Meadows was the next Penguin across the line as he clocked a 30:46.7, a time also better than the previous school record, to finish 45th overall.
Redshirt freshman Blaze Fichter placed 73rd, clocking a 31:23.1. Horizon League Freshman of the Year Sage Vavro was the fourth Penguin to cross the line, clocking a 31:24.5 to finish 75th.
Tyler Clark rounded out the Penguins' scoring effort with a time of 31:39.3 to finish 92nd and solidify all five Penguins' scorers placing in the top 100.
In the Penguins' ninth-place team finish, they had 311 points. Butler won the regional meet with 43 points while Wisconsin finished runner-up with 70.
In the women's 6k, Alyssa Deeds led the Penguins with a time of 22:41.7 to finish 127th. The second Penguin to cross the line was freshman Grace Rhoades who clocked a 23:06.1 to place 155th.
Hannah Wagner's time of 23:34.8 was good for 180th place while Alayna Cuevas was close behind, finishing 183rd with a time of 23:39.3.
Notre Dame won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the women with 39 points. Wisconsin finished runner-up with 71 points.
