Indianapolis, Ind. — IUPUI won the final three sets to rally for a five-set victory over the Youngstown State volleyball team on Saturday afternoon at The Jungle. The set scores were 21-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-13.
IUPUI held a 60-49 edge in kills for the match, and that included a substantial 40-26 advantage over the final three sets.
Abbie Householder had a match-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs, and Jazmin Vergara recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Penguins offensively. Householder added two aces and two blocks for 20 points.
Defensively, Julia Sell had six block assists, and Dayan Malave had two solo blocks and three block assists while adding six kills. Isidora Sisic had 21 digs.
IUPUI had four players reach double digits in kills, led by Maia Long's 14 kills. Morgan Ostrowski had 11 kills in 20 attempts and hit .400.
The Penguins won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22, and IUPUI extended the match with a 25-19 win in the third. YSU led 8-3 in the fourth, but IUPUI answered with an 11-3 run to take a 14-11 advantage. The Jaguars did not trail again in the set to force the tiebreaking fifth set.
A block by Sell and Josi Borum gave the Penguins a 9-8 lead in the fifth, and YSU later scored four straight points to take a 13-12 advantage. IUPUI scored the final three points of the night.
Youngstown State will finish its first loop through Horizon League play on Friday at 6 p.m. at Robert Morris.
