High-Powered Offense Leads to Four-Set Win at Purdue Fort Wayne

The Youngstown State volleyball team hit .310 collectively and had three players finish with at least 12 kills in a four-set victory at Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday evening. The set scores from the Gates Sports Complex were 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.

Jazmin Vergara led all players with 21 kills, and Abbie Householder finished with 15 for her ninth straight match with at least 10. Jocelyn Jordan posted 12 kills in just 19 attempts and hit .526.

Householder added 13 digs to collect a double-double, and Isidore Sisic finished with 17 digs. Josi Borum had 29 assists, and Julia Sell had a match-best five blocks.

Panna Ratkai had 16 kills on 46 attempts to lead Purdue Fort Wayne.

Youngstown State's final lead in the opening set came at 13-12, and the Mastodons scored the final three points to win 25-20. Purdue Fort Wayne then had a 23-20 lead in the second before the Penguins stormed back to steal a 25-23 win.

Gabriela Machin started the 5-0 run with a kill, and Householder and Vergara followed with kills to tie the score. Householder then had a solo block to give YSU its first lead of the set, and Borum followed with an ace on set point.

The Penguins were strong again to end the third set, closing on a 6-1 spurt that was finished by a pair of Borum kills. In the fourth, Youngstown State opened up a 15-8 lead after a Householder ace, and the margin extended to double digits at 21-11 on an ace by Isabel Schaefbauer. Purdue Fort Wayne cut into the lead and got as close as 24-22 before Householder finish the win with her 15th kill.

Youngstown State will try to win again on Saturday when it plays at IUPUI. The match against the Jaguars will begin at 4 p.m.
