Box Score Youngstown, Ohio – Senior Lilly Ritz recorded her 12th of the season with 23 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 76-60 win over Wright State on Thursday evening at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins, who have won three straight, improve to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in the Horizon League while the Raiders fall to 2-19 overall and 1-10 in the league.
Malia Magestro poured in 17 points while Paige Shy posted 14 points and connected on 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Dena Jarrells added 11 points with three assists for the Penguins, who made 11 3-pointers. Megan Callahan added a career-high seven assists, and Mady Aulbach contributed five assists.
Jarrells and Ritz led the Penguins to a hot-shooting first quarter with eight and seven points, respectively, as the Penguins connected on 8-of-16 from the floor.
Wright State began the scoring with a 3-pointer before a Shy basket and Ritz three-point play put YSU up, 5-3. The Raiders tied the score at 5-5, but Jarrells hit a 3-pointer and had an old-fashioned three-point play to put YSU up 11-5 with 6:13 to go in the first. After that burst by Jarrells, the Penguins did not trail again and led for the final 37 minutes.
WSU cut the lead to four, 15-11, but a 3-pointer by Shy gave the Penguins seven-point edge, 18-11. The Raiders scored the next six points on a three-point play by Taylor Johnson-Matthews and a 3-pointer by Channing Chappell to get back within one, 18-17, with 2:13 to go. YSU's lead was 22-19 at the end of the period.
The Penguins scored eight of the first 10 points to start the second quarter to expand their lead to 30-21 with 7:08 to go. A Ritz layup and a 3-pointer by Magestro gave Youngstown State a 27-19 lead, and after a basket by the Raiders, Callahan made her first 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to nine. YSU pushed its lead to 36-24 after two free throws by Aulbach and two baskets by Ritz.
Wright State scored the final three points of the second quarter as the Penguins held a 36-27 lead at halftime.
The Penguins matched the 12-point advantage from the second quarter at 41-29 on a 3-pointer by Callahan and a layup by Ritz early in the third period. Wright State used a 10-3 run to cut the YSU lead down to five, but Shy hit her second of two straight 3s to extend the Penguins' lead back to eight, 47-39, with 4:14 left in the third. A layup by Tenleigh Phelps regained a 10-point lead for the Penguins a minute later.
The Penguins led 55-46 at the end of the third, and they scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter on a basket by Ritz and five straight points by Magestro to boost its lead to 62-46 with 7:59 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Magestro, her third of the game, pushed the YSU lead to its peak at 65-48 with 6:14 left. The Raiders scored the next seven points to trim the deficit to 10, but that's as close as they would get.
The Penguins shot 48.2% for the game and made 11 3-pointers on 26 attempts. They made three more triples than Wright State, who leads the Horizon League in 3s per game with 9.5 per contest. YSU held a decisive 40-20 rebounding edge, and the Penguins grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. YSU had 21 assists on 27 field goals.
Bryce Nixon led Wright State with 16 points, and Johnson-Matthews finished with 11.
The Penguins host Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
