Men's Golf Begins 2022-23 Season Monday at Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational

The Youngstown State men's golf team will begin its 2022-23 season on Monday when it begins play in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.

The event will feature 14 other schools including Marshall, Appalachian State, Bellarmine, Belmont, Butler, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Longwood, Morehead State, Mount St. Mary's, Northern Kentucky and Purdue Fort Wayne.

The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. each day. The course will play approximately 6,523 yards and par is 71. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.

Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Bryan Kordupel, Brian Terlesky, Cade Kreps, Cole Christman and Ryan Sam. In addition, Dean Austalosh will be competing as an individual.

Season Preview

Looking For Continued Success

Youngstown State will be looking for continued success in 2022-23 after a successful 2021-22 season that featured a tournament victory and a runner-up finish at the Horizon League Championships.
YSU finished in second place at the 2022 Horizon League Golf Championships on April 26, 2022, at Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. YSU finished with a three-round team total of 861 to finish 10 strokes behind pre-tournament favorite Wright State. The second-place finish tied for the best performance at the league meet in school history, which came back in 2006. YSU's 861 is the lowest three-round performance at the Horizon League Championships in program history, surpassing the previous mark of 863 that was set in 2006.
The Penguins placed three golfers in the top nine and all five finished in the top 17. Cole Christman finished fourth with a three-round 212 (72-69-71) to earn a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament Team. The fourth-place finish is the best for a Penguin at the conference meet since Michael Lower placed fourth in 2011. Christman became the first Penguin to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team since Brandon Pluchinsky in 2015.
In addition to their victory at NKU's The Jewell and their runner-up finish at the Horizon League Championships, the Penguins posted six additional top-five finishes during the 2021-22 season. YSU finished in the top five in eight of its 12 tournaments on the campaign.

Kordupel Returns for Fifth Year

Senior Bryan Kordupel returns for a fifth season in 2022-23. The Boardman, Ohio, native competed in all 12 tournaments and 32 rounds last season with a career-best 73.7 strokes-per-round average and a low round of 68.
Kordupel's 73.7 strokes-per-round average, which ranked second on the team, ranks as the sixth-lowest single-season scoring average in program history. Kordupel earned two top-10 finishes and six top-20 finishes while being YSU's top finisher on three occasions in 2021-22.
Following the 2021-22 season, Kordupel was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the second straight year. The Penguins had multiple players selected to the league's all-academic team for the first time since 2010. Kordupel, who was also selected to the all-academic team in 2021, became just the fifth player in program history to earn Horizon League All-Academic honors multiple times.
Kordupel has played in all 25 tournaments that YSU has played since the start of the 2019-20 season.

Consistency from Christman

Cole Christman continued to be consistent force in YSU's lineup in 2021-22. The Boardman, Ohio, native played in all 12 tournaments and 32 rounds last season with a career-best 74.3 strokes-per-round average and a career-low round of 67. He earned three top-10 finishes and seven top-20 finishes while being YSU's top finisher on two occasions.
Christman earned a career-best fourth-place finish at the 2022 Horizon League Championships with a three-round score of 212 (72-69-71). He became the first Penguin since 2015 to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team.
Christman has played in all 25 events that YSU has played since he joined the program in 2019-20.

Returning Experience

In addition to Christman and Kordupel, the Penguins return a number of other experienced players in 2022-23.
Senior Brian Terlesky has competed in seven tournaments and 18 rounds during his YSU career. Last season, he participated in two tournaments and five rounds with a career-best 78.6 strokes-per-round average and a low round of 77.
Senior Cade Kreps competed in four tournaments and 11 rounds last season with a 77.3 strokes-per-round average and a career-low round of 73. The Boardman, Ohio, native competed in one tournament and three rounds as a redshirt freshman at Akron in 2019-20.
Junior Dean Austalosh has participated in six tournaments and 15 rounds during his YSU career. Last season, he competed in four tournaments and 11 rounds with a career-best 78.1 strokes-per-round average and a career-low round of 71.
Sophomore Jacob Sylak participated in three tournaments and eight rounds last season as a true freshman. The Mineral Ridge, Ohio, native averaged 80.0 strokes per round while recording a low round of 72.
Sophomore Conner Stevens competed in one tournament and three rounds in 2021-22. The Brookfield, Ohio, native recorded a three-round 223 (78-74-71) in his collegiate debut at the Bucknell Invitational.

Talented Newcomers

In addition to its core of returning players, YSU has also added three talented newcomers to its 2022-23 roster.
True freshman Michael Porter was a four-year letter winner and three-time First-Team All-Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference selection at McDonald High School. The McDonald, Ohio, native was named the MVAC Player of the Year in 2021.
True freshman Ayden Richmond was a four-year letter winner and four-year Team MVP at Geneva High School. The Geneva, Ohio, native was named the Chagrin Valley Conference MVP and the Ashtabula County Player of the Year in 2021.
True freshman Ryan Sam was a four-year letter winner and three-time All-American Conference Player of the Year at Boardman High School. The Canfield, Ohio, native was also a four-time First-Team All-AAC selection. Sam will make his collegiate debut on Monday.

Roster Composition

Youngstown State will enter the 2022-23 season with plenty of experience, as five of the team's 10 players are upperclassmen. The roster includes four seniors, one junior, two sophomores and three freshmen.
All 10 Penguins on the 2022-23 roster hail from Northeast Ohio and nine players are from the Mahoning Valley. Five players on this year's squad played at Boardman High School.
