The Youngstown State men's and women's cross country programs will compete at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in Southbend, Ind. on Friday.
The race will take place at the Burke Golf Course on the campus of Notre Dame. The Blue Division Race of the women's 5k is set to kick off the full day of races at 10:30 a.m. The men's 5-mile Blue Division Race will follow at 11:15 a.m. Following the Blue Division, the Penguins will start the day with runners in both the women's 5k and men's 5-mile Open Division Races that begin at 12:00 p.m. and 12:45 p.m., respectively. After the Open Division, the majority of YSU's runners will compete in the Gold Division Race with the women's 5k set for 1:30 p.m and the men's 5-mile set for 2:15 p.m.

Competing Teams
The women's Gold Division 5k Race will have 19 competing universities: UW-Milwaukee, Youngstown State, Pittsburgh, Arkansas Tech, Nebraska, San Diego State, Cleveland State, Texas Tech, Western Michigan, UW-Green Bay, Montana State, South Alabama, Cal Poly, Marquette, IUPUI, Akron, Buffalo, Valparaiso, and UC-Riverside.
The YSU women will be competing against conference foe Milwaukee, who won the Horizon League in 2021 and tied for second with the Penguins in the #HLXC Preseason Poll. The Guins will also face league competitors IUPUI, Cleveland State, and Green Bay in the Gold Division Race.
The men's Gold Division 5-mile will have 14 competing schools: Buffalo, IUPUI, Vanderbilt, UW-Milwaukee, Youngstown State, Nebraska, Loyola Marymount, Texas Tech, UW-Green Bay, South Alabama, Marquette, San Francisco, Valparaiso, and UC-Riverside.
The Penguin men will face defending Horizon League champion IUPUI who was slated to win the Horizon League in the preseason poll. Conference foes Milwaukee and Green Bay will also be competing in the Gold Division.
Last Time Out
The Penguins competed at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday. Hunter Christopher's school-record time of 24:13 in the men's 8k highlighted their impressive performance.
Christopher finished 11th out of a loaded field of 126 runners in his record-breaking performance. Senior Chase Easterling also finished ahead of the previous school-record time. He clocked a 24:26 in his 15th-place finish. Ryan Meadows was the next Penguin to cross the line at 38th, running a 25:03, the eighth-fastest time in school history. Almost the entire team finished with personal-best times.
The men's team finished fifth with 164 points out of a field of 15 teams with several national and regional rankings.
Senior Morgan Cole highlighted the Penguins' finish in the women's 5k at the race. She finished 18th out of 163 runners, clocking a 17:48. Senior Mackenzie Scott was the second Penguin to cross the line in 74th place with a time of 18:50. Overall the women finished 15th with 394 points.
Following the Penguins' noteworthy showing at the Battle in Beantown, YSU swept the Nike #HLXC Runners of the Week Awards. Christopher and Cole were named Runners of the Week, and Beau Gorby and Molly Hopple were named Freshmen Runners of the Week.

After a week hiatus, the Penguins will divide and conquer as the Guins are set to return to State College, Pa. for the Penn State National Open and also head to the Bowling Green Falcon Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. At the Falcon Invitational, the Steve Price Women's 6k will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Bob Rothermel Men's 8k at 5:15 p.m. Times to follow for Penn State.
