The Youngstown State men's and women's cross country programs will compete in seven races in the fall of 2022 before heading to Rochester, Mich. for the Horizon League Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29, head coach Brian Gorby announced Tuesday.

YSU had an impressive showing at the 2021 Horizon League Championships. The men's team earned conference runner-up, its fourth of the last nine seasons. The men's team will look to capture its first league championship since 2018, which would mark its third in the last seven seasons. The women's team also earned a top-three finish at the league championships, marking their sixth top-three Horizon League finish since the 2011 season.

The Penguins' 2022 schedule includes many races with high-level competition and several post-season opportunities. Coach Gorby stated that the team is "focused more on training and developing/maximizing team fitness this fall, so when YSU does compete, they'll be prepared to race at a high, Power 5 level at Penn State, Notre Dame, and Boston College." They are "looking to be in the mix going after championship opportunities in the post-season."

The Penguins begin their season on Sept. 9 at the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pa. YSU then heads to Cedarville, Ohio on Sept. 16 to compete at the All-Ohio Championships.

The Guins will head to Chestnut Hill, Ma. on Sept. 23 to compete at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown Invitational hosted by Boston College before heading to the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Sept. 30.

After a two-week hiatus, the Penguins are set to compete at both the Penn State National Open and Bowling Green Falcon Invitational on Oct. 14. On the following weekend, the Penguins will race at the Bill Lennox Slippery Rock Invitational on Oct. 22. This competition marks their final regular-season event before heading to the Horizon League Championships.

After the Horizon League Championships, the Penguins will head to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships hosted by Indiana State on Nov. 11. YSU's final race of the season will be on Nov.19 in Stillwater, Okla. as the Guins compete at the NCAA National Cross Country Championships hosted by Oklahoma State.
