Brosky Named to Horizon League All-Tournament Team

Youngstown State junior pitcher Matt Brosky was named to the 2022 Horizon League Baseball All-Tournament Team for his performance in the league's postseason tournament, which concluded on Saturday.

Brosky, who was named the 2022 Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, tossed a complete game shutout while matching his career high with 10 strikeouts in leading YSU to a 6-0 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in an elimination game in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday. The junior right-hander becomes the first Penguin to be named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team since 2014.

Youngstown State dropped out of the tournament one game away from championship Saturday. The Penguins fell 4-2 to Oakland on Friday night in their third elimination game of the tournament. After dropping a 2-0 decision to Oakland late on Thursday night, YSU bounced back less than 12 hours later to beat Northern Kentucky 11-7 while facing elimination. Wright State claimed the 2022 Horizon League Baseball Championship crown with a 24-0 victory over Oakland on Saturday.

Brosky, the Strongsville, Ohio, native, allowed only three baserunners at Wright State's Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio, on Wednesday as the Penguins won a conference tournament game for the first time since 2018. Brosky needed only 99 pitches and allowed just one runner to reach scoring position, which came due to a passed ball in the third inning. He allowed just three hits, one of which was an infield single, and the Mastodons managed just two outfield fly outs. Of the 27 outs Brosky recorded, 10 were strikeouts, nine were groundouts and eight were fly outs.

Brosky didn't allow a leadoff batter to reach until the eighth inning, and he retired the Mastodons in order in six of the nine innings. He had two strikeouts in the first and third innings, and he had at least one strikeout in eight of the nine frames.

Brosky became the first Penguin to pitch a shutout in the Horizon League Baseball Championship, and he joined Jeremy Quinlan (2014) and Corey Ohalek (2002) as the only YSU pitchers to toss a complete game in the tournament. Brosky also tied Phil Klein's 10-strikeout effort in 2011 for the most strikeouts in a game by a Penguin in the Horizon League's tournament.

Brosky's eighth strikeout of the day gave him 100 for the season, and he finished the afternoon with 102. He is just the fourth Penguin ever to reach at least 100 punchouts in a season, joining Brad Hennessey (2001), Klein (2011), and Collin Floyd (2021), Brosky's former teammate who was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year last season. Brosky also upped his innings total in 2022 to 98.2, which is the fifth-highest single-season total ever by a Penguin.

Brosky, the First-Team All-Horizon League selection, finished the season with a 6-7 record, a 2.65 ERA, 102 strikeouts, 22 walks, five complete games and a .231 opponent batting average in 98.2 innings over 15 starts. Brosky's 2.65 ERA ranks as the ninth-lowest single-season mark in program history. He tied the single-season program record with 15 starts, and his 102 strikeouts rank as the fourth most in a season in school history. Brosky is just the second Penguin since 2013 to start 15 games in a season.

Brosky helped lead Youngstown State to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2005-06. The Penguins also won multiple games in the Horizon League Tournament for the first time since winning the championship in 2014.
