2022 Women's Lacrosse Season In Review

In just its second season, the YSU Women's Lacrosse team produced the first Conference Championship in program history. The Penguins finished tied atop the Mid-American Conference standings thanks to a memorable five-game winning streak in April.

2022 Team and Individual Highlights

  • YSU picked up first-ever conference wins over Akron, Central Michigan and Robert Morris…the Guins swept season series from Detroit Mercy, Akron and Kent State.
  • In overtime, YSU was 3-0 beating Akron and Detroit Mercy twice. In one-goal games, the Penguins were 5-0, including a last-second win at Kent State.
  • YSU opened the season with impressive wins over St. Bonaventure (18-7) and Saint Francis (19-6).
  • The Penguins closed out the month of April winning five straight games including road wins at CMU and RMU…the win at RMU on April 30 secured a piece of the conference title.
  • YSU won five games at home and five games on the road. Four wins came with the Guins playing in the WATTS due to inclement weather.
  • Head Coach Theresa Walton was named the MAC Coach of the Year while Natalie Calandra-Ryan was tabbed the MAC's Freshman of the Year. Calandra-Ryan and Aryss Lindsey were named first-team All-MAC while Ali Korin, Erin Clark and Savannah Clarke were second-team all-conference selections. Clark and Lindsey were named the MAC's All-Tournament team.
  • In the cage, Clarke tallied 167 saves while logging a season-long save percentage of 42.9 on 514 shots faced. Clarke led the MAC with 9.50 saves per game.
  • Calandra-Ryan led the MAC in points per game (5.0), shots per game (8.22) and goals per game (3.78) while Clark led the conference in assists per game (2.00).
  • Five Guins registered at least 19-or-more goals on the season – Calandra-Ryan (68), Ali Korin (54), Erin Clark (36), Lauren Ottensmeyer (29) and Sydney Bumstead (19). Three Penguins had at least 13 assists on the campaign – Clark (36), Calandra-Ryan (23) and Korin (13).
  • Six Penguins had at least 11 draw controls on the season – Calandra-Ryan (97), Clark (56), Emma Carter (25), Abby Yesko (25), Skyler Weber (12) and Lindsey (11). Eleven Penguins had at least 13 ground balls.
  • The offense found the back of the net 246 times, averaging 13.63 goals per game. YSU scored two mores per game in 2022 than in 2021. The Guins had 105 assists for 347 points scored for the year.
  • YSU had 64 free-position goals on 130 free-position shots. It limited its opponents to 32 goals on 85 shots. The Guins had 12 goals a player down while allowing just three when up a woman.
  • Thirteen players scored at least one goal while 15 had assists and points and 16 attempted a shot.
  • YSU outscored its opponents 66-53 in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Guins scored on all three of their overtime shots in 2022.
