Buffenbarger tied the school record set by Casey Crozier from 2011-14.
The Penguins improve to 27-22 overall and 12-9 in Horizon League play while the Mastodons fall to 7-37 overall and 6-15 in league play.
Junior Avrey Schumacher went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in while senior Yazmine Romero drove in three runs. Junior Conchetta Rinaldi also had four hits.
The Penguins used a nine-run fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie en route to the run-rule victory.
Schumacher started the YSU scoring barrage with a run-scoring single that plated Cassandra Carlson with the go-ahead run. Alex DeLeon's bases-loaded hit by pitch scored Schumacher and Romero's bases-loaded walk put the Penguins up 6-3.
A pair of wild pitches plated Bree Kohler and DeLeon to give the Penguins an 8-3 lead.
Megan Turner reached second on a fielder's choice and scored on Rinaldi's double down the left-field line and gave YSU a 9-3 lead.
Schumacher's bases-loaded double cleared the bases to put the Penguins up nine runs.
The Mastodons added a run in the bottom of the fifth for the final score.
YSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Purdue Fort Wayne scored once in the bottom of the second and twice in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
Youngstown State knotted the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth.
