Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-14 decision to non-conference opponent Winthrop on Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
YSU falls to a 3-3 overall record while continuing to be 1-0 in Mid-American Conference play, while Winthrop improves to 1-4 on the season.
The YSU offense saw six different scorers on the day, including five with multi-goal performances. Natalie Calandra-Ryan, Sydney Bumstead and Erin Clark each netted a hat trick of goals for YSU, with Lauren Ottensmeyer and Molly Sheridan adding a pair of goals apiece. Jordan Miller accounted for the Penguins final goal, adding a solo score.
Adding to her offensive performance, Clark accumulated a game-high three assists, while also tying a game-high for points with six. Calandra-Ryan grabbed a game-high three ground balls.
Mikaela Staranko and Savannah Clarke both spent time in the cage during the contest, combining for 11 saves across 33 shot attempts from Winthrop. Staranko received the lionshare of minutes, playing three full quarters.
Winthrop was led by Alyssa Angelo, who tallied a game-high five goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist for the afternoon. Ellie Dutton added four goals and one ground ball.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the 8:02 mark following a pair of scores from Winthrop's Angelou and a lone goal from Savanah Paton.
Answering, the Penguins stringed together a pair of goals from Clark and S. Bumstead to close the Winthrop advantage to a single goal with 4:23 remaining the opening quarter. Winthrop responded with a 2-0 scoring streak of its own to retake a three-goal lead head into the second quarter.
Following scores by the Eagles at the 13:53 and 13:26 points of the second to expand their lead back to five, 7-2, the Penguins would score three unanswered and claw back to within two as S. Bumstead and Clark would each net their second goal of the contest at the 11:32 and 10:54 marks, followed by Calandra-Ryan's score at the 10:05 point.
Winthrop would close the half on a two-goal run, scoring at the 5:27 mark and again with just 31 ticks remaining in the quarter and took a 10-5 lead into the break.
Out of the locker room, YSU used the first five minutes of the third quarter to cut the Winthrop advantage to a single goal, 10-9, following scores by Miller (14:30), Ottensmeyer (14:03, 12:33) and Molly Sheridan (11:13). Sheridan's score counted as her first of her career.
Countering, the Eagles would score a four-piece of goals of their own, occupying the next five minutes of the quarter to extend its lead back to 14-9. Sheridan added her second goal of the quarter at the 3:15 point, which acted as the final goal scored by either team during the quarter.
The Penguins would find the back of the net four times in the final quarter, but would be evened by the Eagles scoring four goals of their own. Overall, YSU was able to outscore Winthrop 9-8 during the final 30 minutes of play.
