2003 | Penguins Capture First Horizon League Women's Title
Dayton, Ohio -- The Youngstown State women's golf team earned the first-ever Horizon League Women's Golf title and first Horizon League women's crown in school history finishing 10 strokes ahead of Loyola at the League's Women's Golf Championships at the Country Club of the North on Tuesday.
The Penguins had three golfers finish in the top five to pave the way for the championship. Lori Hatcher claimed medalist honors, Jennifer Grossi was third and Gina Abruzzino tied for fifth.
The Penguins finished with a three-round score of 981 (328-331-322). Loyola placed second in the tournament with a 991 while Butler was third with a 994. Cleveland State placed fourth with a 1,033. The Penguins had the lowest overall score after each round in the wire-to-wire victory.
After the opening round, the Guins held a slim one-shot advantage over the Ramblers 328-329. The Penguins were able to get some breathing room in the second round after carding a 3331 to Loyola's 335. YSU had a two-round total of 659 while Loyola sat in second place with a 664 following day one.
On the final day, the Penguins had their lowest team round of the event with a 322.
Hatcher who earned the individual title by six strokes with a 235 (77-80-78). Hatcher was the only golfer the tournament with two rounds in the 70s. She had a three-shot lead after the first round, a five-shot lead following the second round before her final margin of victory (six shots).
Grossi placed third with a 242 (82-80-80), one stroke behind Butler's Melanie McLeod. Grossi was in second place following the first 36 holes. Abruzzino tied for fifth place, carding a 245 (84-83-78). All three individuals earned all-tournament accolades. Also competing for YSU was Nichole Hamstreet who was 13th with a 264 (85-88-91) and Jennie Fleiner who placed 16th with a 267 (92-89-86).

2009 | Penguins are Champs! Samantha Formeck Takes Medalist Honors
Lexington, Ky. -- In what was a complete team effort by the Youngstown State women's golf team, the Penguins ran away with the 2009 Horizon League Championship after winning the league title by 17 strokes at Kearney Hills Golf Course.
As a team, the Penguins carded a three-round total of 968 (331-319-318) to take the crown. The Penguins led after every round of the tournament and their final round of 318 was a tournament low.
Leading the way for YSU was freshman standout Samantha Formeck, who took medalist honors following a three-round total of 239 (78-82-79).
Formeck follows up Katie Rogner's impressive freshman performance from a year ago to make it back-to-back freshman medalist for the Penguins at the league championship.
In addition, Formeck was named both Horizon League Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Formeck was also named to the All-Tournament Team and the All-Horizon Team.
Junior Brittany Stillwagon finished in second place after firing a 241 (84-79-78). Rogner was one stroke behind shooting a 242 (83-75-84) to claim fifth place.
Both Stillwagon and Rogner joined Formeck on being named to the All-Tournament Team and Rogner also earned All-Horizon League Team honors.
Junior Ann Ciavarella was the next finisher for the Penguins as she shot a 249 (86-83-80) placing 12th. Senior Mollie Boney rounded it out for the Penguins, carding a 256 (90-85-81 to finish in 19th.
Head Coach Roseann Schwartz was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season for her efforts.
The Guins overcame a second-place finish from a year ago to claim their second conference title. YSU won its first title in 2003 and has finished second three times.
Individually, this is the third time a Penguin has taken an individual crown.

2015 | Strong Back Nine Sends Women's Golf to Conference Title
The Youngstown State women's golf team outscored Oakland by 12 shots over the final nine holes to pull away for an 11-shot victory in the Horizon League Championship on Sunday at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
Junior Emily Dixon was four-under par on the back nine and won Medalist honors by one shot, and she was joined in the top five by seniors Allison Mitzel and Aislynn Merling. Dixon is YSU's fourth individual champion in its Horizon League era, and the Penguins won the team title for the first time since 2009.
On Sunday, the Penguins shot a 312 and ended with a 926 for the tournament. Oakland finished with a 319 for its final round and finished with a 937. YSU entered play on Sunday with a four-shot lead.
Dixon carded a three-round total of 224 for the Championships with rounds of 75, 77 and an even-par 72. Dixon was in third place to start the day, eight shots behind leader Morgan Smith on Oakland. On Sunday, Smith shot an 81 as Dixon was able to erase the deficit and earn the victory.
Dixon had a 39 through nine holes before catching fire on the back nine. She shot a four-under par 33 on the back nine with birdies at No. 12, 14, 16 and 17.
Mitzel finished in a tie for third with a 232, Merling was fourth with a 233, Emily Rohanna finished 12th with a 239 and Courtney Shutt was 13th with a 241.
Mitzel had a final-round 81. She carded a two-over par 37 on the front side before finishing with a 44 on the back nine. Merling finished with a final round 78 in a round that featured four birdies. She had birdies at No. 5, No. 12, No. 14 and No. 16 on the day.
Rohanna carded an 83 to finish with her 239. On Sunday, she shot a 40 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine. Shutt had an 81 and was just behind Rohanna in the standings. After firing a 41 on the front nine she had a 40 on the back side including a birdie at No. 15.
In the team race, Oakland had the early momentum on Sunday and trailed by just one stroke at the midway point of the day. But YSU's back nine play once again proved to be the difference.
The Guins had scores of 33, 38, 40 and 44 on the back nine for a total of 155 while Oakland had scores of 40, 41, 41, 43 for a 165.

2021 | Shutt Earns Medalist Honors to Lead Penguins to Fourth League Crown
West Lafayette, Ind. -- Youngstown State senior golfer Katlyn Shutt earned medalist honors with a school and league-record three-round score of 208 to lead the Penguins to their fourth Horizon League Championship on April 27 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
The Penguins fired a final-round 295 on Tuesday to pull away for a 15-stroke victory over runner-up IUPUI. YSU's three-round total of 893 is the lowest 54-hole score in Horizon League Championships history, shattering the previous mark of 920 that was set by Detroit Mercy in 2013. The performance also ranks as the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. The Penguins and Jaguars were tied for the lead heading into the final round of play. YSU wins the league championship for the fourth time in school history and for the first time since 2015.
Shutt earned medalist honors at the league meet for the second time in her career, becoming just the third player in Horizon League history to win the event multiple times. She becomes the first golfer to win multiple individual league crowns since Detroit Mercy's Lindsey Lammers did so in 2012 and 2014. The Dover, Ohio, native also won the league championship as a freshman in 2017 with a school and league-record three-round score of 217. With her victory, Shutt claimed YSU's league-leading seventh individual league championship.
With her first-place finish, Shutt was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team for the third time in her career. In addition to her victory in 2017, she tied for the second at the league meet as a junior in 2019. Shutt set a program and Horizon League record with her three-round total of 208. She broke her own league championships record of 217 and her own school record of 213.
Shutt carded a four-under-par 68 in Tuesday's final round to pull away for a dominating 11-stroke victory. After setting the league-single round scoring record with a five-under-par 67 in the first round on Sunday, Shutt now owns the two lowest rounds in Horizon League Championships history. Her bogey-free 68 in the final round featured 14 pars and four birdies. She made par on each of her first eight holes before a birdie on No. 9 to shoot a one-under-par 35 on the front nine. On the back nine, Shutt carded birdies at No. 10, No. 14 and No. 16 to fire a three-under-par 33.
Puthita Khuanrudee finished in third place with a three-round score of 221 (75-74-72) to earn a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament Team. The junior's even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round featured 10 pars and four birdies. She made par or better on 11 consecutive holes from No. 5 to No. 15. Khuanrudee tallied birdies on No. 1, No. 8, No. 9 and No. 18. She fired a one-under-par 35 on the front nine before shooting one over par on the back nine.
Christina Lewis finished tied for 21st with a three-round total of 234 (76-83-75). The sophomore's final-round 75, which matched her low round of the season, included nine pars and three birdies. After shooting a three-over-par 39 on the front nine, she settled in to fire an even-par 36 on the back nine. Lewis notched birdies on No. 5, No. 11 and No. 16.
Danae Rugola finished tied for 24th with a three-round score of 236 (78-78-80). The sophomore's final-round 80 featured eight pars and a pair of birdies. After shooting five over par on the front nine, she made par or better on six of her last nine holes to post a three-over-par 39 on the back nine. Rugola recorded birdies on No. 6 and No. 11.
Jenna Vivo finished the event tied for 29th with a three-round total of 239 (82-77-80). The junior's final-round 80 featured nine pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 10. The Boardman, Ohio, native made par or better on eight of her first 11 holes. Vivo posted a four-over-par 40 on the front and back nine.
