Penguins Fall to Butler in Final Non-Conference Test

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – Facing its final non-conference opponent of the 2022 spring season, the Youngstown State women's lacrosse team fell to Butler on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field, 12-9.

The Penguins drop to a 5-6 overall record on the season, while the Bulldogs improve their non-conference record to 5-4.

Ali Korin, for the third-straight game, led the Penguins offense, tying for a game-high four goals scored on five shots. Korin also picked-up an assist for a five-point outing.

Adding to the scoring effort, Calandra-Ryan tallied a hat trick of goals to continue her streak of multi-goal outings to 11 games for the year. Calandra-Ryan has now scored at least three goals in seven games during the season. Second-year Penguins Jordan Miller and Lauren Ottensmeyer each scored a goal apiece.

Led by Conners with four goals, three Bulldogs notched multi-goal performances to combine for nine of Butler's 12 goals-scored.

Following Butler jumping out to a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game, Korin scored the first of four goals for the contest at the 12:26 mark of the opening quarter to even the score at a goal apiece. Just over four minutes later, at the 8:02 point of the period, Korin added another score off the Penguins lone successful free-position attempt of the game to bring the contest to a 2-2 stalemate.

Prior to the end of the first, both Butler and YSU would go on 2-0 scoring runs to head into the second at a 4-4 draw.

Korin ended a near three-minute scoring silence by both teams to open the second quarter from Victory Field, completing her fourth hat trick of the season with a goal at the 12:56 mark to give the Penguins the lead, 5-4. After a pair of Bulldogs scores, Korin fired one passed Butler's McGrath for her fourth score of the afternoon and even the score at six-all. From that point, Butler netted a three-piece of unanswered goals to take a 9-6 advantage into the halftime locker room.

Out of the break, the Penguins lone score of the third quarter came at the 13:10 mark when Clark found Calandra-Ryan in open space for the goal. Countering, the Bulldogs pieced together another 3-0 scoring stretch to own a commanding five-goal lead, 12-5, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

YSU took six shots during the quarter, but was able to find the back of the net once.

The Penguins silenced the Bulldogs scoring effort in the fourth, but were only able to add two of their own to fall short of the comeback bid. Ottensmeyer became to the fourth Penguin to scoring during the none-conference contest with 6:36 remaining in regulation, while Calandra-Ryan found the back of the net with :01 left to play to tally her sixth game with at least three goals scored.

For the game, YSU outshot Butler 27-25, including 19-17 in the shots-on-goal category. The Penguins also edged the Bulldogs in draw controls 17-11.
