Five Penguins Receive Mid-American Conference Postseason Honors

The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team was well-represented across the 2025 Mid-American Conference All-Conference Teams, the league announced Wednesday.

Tori Bustamante and Katie Grottenthaler were dubbed as First-Team All-MAC selections, while Lena Cox was chosen as a Second-Team All-MAC selection.

Bustamante led the MAC with 36 caused turnovers. She had nine more caused turnovers than any other player in the conference. She was the only player in the conference to average at least 2.00 CT/G during the season, as she had a staggering 2.40 CT/G, which ranked 11th in the country. Bustamante also had a team-high 42 ground balls, which is a new program record, and ranked fourth in all of the MAC. She recorded at least six ground balls on three occasions, and her season-high seven ground balls vs. Kent State on Apr. 26 ranks as the third-most in a single game in program history. She caused at least three turnovers eight times this season, including a season-high four turnovers five times.

Grottenthaler rewrote the record books on the offense this season for the Penguins, as she led the team in points (50), goals (43), free-position goals (21), and draw controls (76). Her 43 goals ranked third in the MAC and were also the third-most in a single season in program history. Her goals-per-game average of 2.87 was also third-best in the conference. Her 21 free-position goals set a new single-season program record, breaking the old record of 17, which was set by Ali Korin in 2022. Her free-position shooting percentage of 75% ranked third in the country, while her 1.40 FPG/G ranked fourth. Her 76 draw controls ranked third in the MAC, and also are the second-most by a Penguin in a single season. She scored at least three goals nine times, including a season-high six goals vs. Gardner-Webb on Mar. 6. She garnered at least five draw controls in seven games, including a season-high 11 vs. Wofford on Mar. 3.

Cox was the main facilitator for the Penguins on offense throughout the season. She had a team-high 26 assists, which ranked second in the conference, and is the second-most ever by a Penguin in a single season. She had multiple assists in 10 games this season, including a season-high three assists four times. She also scored 23 goals for the Penguins during the 2025 season. She scored at least three goals three times, including a season-high four goals twice.

Also receiving postseason honors were Claire Baenziger and Meghan McGrath, as they were named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.

Baenziger ranked fifth on the Penguins in ground balls with 20, and also sixth on the team in goals this season with 17. She corralled at least three ground balls three times this season, including a season-high four ground balls vs. Robert Morris on Mar. 29. She scored at least three goals three times as well, including a season-high four goals vs. Saint Francis on Feb. 16.

McGrath started in all 15 games for YSU during her freshman season on defense, ranking in a tie for fifth on the team with 12 caused turnovers, while also scooping 14 ground balls. She caused a season-high three turnovers vs. Duquesne on Feb. 19 and had a season-high three ground balls on two occasions.
