Bowling Wins Twice, Places 10th at Music City Classic

The ninth-ranked Youngstown State bowling team won its first two bracket matches on Sunday and posted its highest finish ever in 10th place at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic.
The Penguins began the day in 11th place in the 33-team field, and they beat Lincoln Memorial and Nebraska to improve their head-to-head record to 10-2 at the tournament, which was their final competition of the regular season. YSU then fell behind 3-0 to Louisiana Tech but won the next three games in the best-of-seven Baker format to force a game seven. Both teams shot 201 in game seven to force a five-frame tiebreaker, and the Lady Techsters prevailed 109-83 in the match for ninth and 10th.
Youngstown State's previous highest finish at the tournament was 11th, and the Penguins tied the school record for most head-to-head wins at a tournament with 10.
"There is a lot of love and trust with this group, and a lot of fun too," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "What a solid performance today and a great way to head into the conference championship. We are looking forward to solid rest and preparation over the next couple of days and getting ourselves ready for a fun time in New Orleans."
The Penguins dropped their first game of the day 203-176 to Lincoln Memorial, but they won their next eight games to finish off the No. 22 Railsplitters 4-1 and top No. 2 Nebraska 4-0. YSU bowled its highest total of the day in game four against the Huskers with a 242.
Against No. 7 Louisiana Tech, the Penguins had a three-pin loss in game one, then dropped the next two games to trail 3-0. Youngstown State threw the back six strikes in game four to win 223-169, and it followed with a 14-pin win in game five and an 18-win in game six to knot the match at three games apiece. Both teams posted a 201 in game seven to send the match to a tiebreaker, which the Lady Techsters took 109-83.
Youngstown State will compete at the Southland Bowling League Championship next week at Colonial Bowling Lanes in Harahan, La.
