Box Score The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-9 decision to non-conference opponent Canisius on a windy Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
YSU falls to a 5-4 overall with a 3-0 record in Mid-American Conference play, while Canisius improves to 5-2 on the season.
Ali Korin led the Penguins tying for a game-high four goals scored on seven shots – a mark that matches her YSU career-high four-goal game versus Akron on March 3. The Mahopac, N.Y., native went 2-of-3 from the free position line during the contest while scooping a pair of ground balls.
Natalie Calandra-Ryan and Lauren Ottensmeyer also had multi-goal performances for YSU, each scoring two goals apiece.
Savannah Clarke tied for a game-high 10 saves on 29 shots faced for a .440 save percentage in the cage. Clarke also scooped five ground balls.
Stachura logged a four-goal outing while picking-up an assist for Canisius. Adding to her stat line, the junior midfielder tallied six ground balls, four draw controls and three turnovers.
In a defense-heavy first quarter, Calandra-Ryan, on assist from Clark, tuned a nifty spin move into a score to get the Penguins on the board at the 2:10 mark of the period and score the first of two goals on the afternoon.
The Penguins outscored the Golden Griffins in the second, 2-1, following goals by Ottensmeyer and Clark at the 12:44 and 2:33 points to head into the break at a 3-3 stalemate.
Out of the half, Canisius used a trio of 2-0 scoring runs to outscore the Penguins 6-2 in the third and take four-goal, 9-5 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play. Calandra-Ryan and Korin scored unassisted goals at the 6:58 and 1:04 marks during the quarter to break-up the Golden Griffin barrage.
In the fourth, Korin spearheaded the Penguins four-goal offensive effort, scoring three goals to cap her four-goal outing. Ottensmeyer, with a successful free-position attempt at the 5:10 point of the period, logged her fifth multi-goal game of the season in the Penguins fourth score of the fourth. The Golden Griffins scored three of their own during the quarter to counteract the Penguins comeback bid.
