The Youngstown State women's golf team improved in each of its three rounds at the RiverTowne Invitational and finished the two-day tournament in 13th place. The tournament was held at the RiverTowne Country Club in Charleston, S.C., and hosted by Charleston Southern University.
The Penguins saw their team total drop each round, starting with a 329 to open play Monday morning and dropping to 315 for the afternoon round. YSU then shaved nine more strokes on Tuesday to finish with a 306, which tied for the ninth-best total in the field of 16. Youngstown State finished 86-over-par as a team with a three-round score of 950, which was one stroke behind William & Mary.
Individually, freshman Lizzie Saur finished in a tie for 27th with a three-round score of 231. She had rounds of 82 and 76 on Monday, and she carded one-over-par score of 73 on Tuesday to be the highest-finishing Penguin. Saur's final-round 73 marked the lowest round of her young career. Junior Danae Rugola tied for 50th with a three-round total of 239 (86-75-78), and sophomore Madie Smithco was one shot behind her in a tie for 52nd with a 240 (85-77-78).
Junior Christina Lewis finished in a tie for 81st with a 254 (88-87-79), and Ally St. Clair had a three-round total of 265 (82-92-91) to place 85th while competing as an individual. Puthita Khuanrudee competed in the morning round on Monday and the 18 holes on Tuesday, and she registered a 76 and 77.
Oral Roberts won the event by 20 strokes with a three-round total of 878, which was just 14-over-par.
The Penguins will continue their spring slate on March 10 at the three-day Pizza Hut-Lady Thunderbird Invitational. The tournament will be hosted by Southern Utah at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.
