The Youngstown State women's golf team split a pair of matches on day one of the Motor City Cup on Sunday at Mission Inn Resort's Las Colinas Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
The second-seeded Penguins defeated seventh-seeded Northern Kentucky 4-2 in the opening round of the tournament to advance to the semifinals of the championship bracket. The Guins then fell 3-1-2 to third-seeded Green Bay in the semifinals, placing them in the third-place match against fourth-seeded Oakland on Monday.
In the opening-round victory over Northern Kentucky, Danae Rugola (2&1), Christina Lewis (6&5), Lizzie Saur (4&2) and Victoria Gräns (6&4) each earned individual victories to propel YSU to the 4-2 triumph. Madie Smithco fell 10&8 to NKU's Abby Cook while Tori Utrup dropped a 2&3 decision to Gracie Baun.
Green Bay earned three individual victories in the semifinal match to down YSU and advance to the championship match against top-seeded IUPUI. Saur earned a 3&1 victory for the Penguins while Gräns and Rugola each tied their matches. Utrup (4&3), Lewis (6&4), Smithco (6&5) each dropped their head-to-head matchups as the Guins finished the day at 1-1 as a team.
IUPUI topped eighth-seeded UIC 4-2 in the opening round while Oakland downed fifth-seeded Cleveland State 4-1-1 to set up a semifinal matchup between the Jaguars and Golden Grizzlies. IUPUI then defeated Oakland 4-1-1 to advance to the championship match. Green Bay earned its spot in the championship bracket with a 5-1 victory over sixth-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne in the opening round. Youngstown State and Oakland will face off in the third-place match on Monday.
In the consolation bracket, UIC defeated Cleveland State 6-0 while Purdue Fort Wayne beat Northern Kentucky 4-2. The Flames and Mastodons will battle for fifth place on Monday while the Norse and Vikings will square off for seventh place.
