Box Score The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-10 decision on a breezy and chilly Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
YSU (2-2) trailed 4-1 following the first period before scoring five of seven goals in the second to tie the contest six-all at halftime. Niagara (2-2) outscored YSU 9-4 in the second half to earn the win in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
Seven different Penguins scored in the contest as Erin Clark led the offensive charge with three goals and Natalie Calandra-Ryan was only other multi-goal scorer with two. Lois Garlow had four goals to lead the Purple Eagles while Lexi Braniecki and Rachel Crane scored three goals each. In net for YSU, Savannah Clarke posted 15 saves while Jordan Roy had eight for NU.
In the first quarter, the contest was tied 1-1 following a free-position goal by Clark. Niagara closed out the period with three unanswered tallies.
YSU opened the second period up determined and found the net twice in a span of 10 seconds. On the opening draw of the period, Clark scored her second goal of the game and 10 seconds later Calandra-Ryan scored on a breakaway cutting the deficit to one. Just over three minutes later, Emma Carter found Calandra-Ryan for the tying tally at the 11:29 mark.
After Niagara went in front 5-4, Sydney Brumsead scored tying the contest at the 2:59 mark. The Guins took their first lead of the game when Carter scored with just 1:54 left in the half. Clarke made a big save to keep the Guins on top, but soon after, the Purple Eagles scored with 45 seconds left on a free-position shot.
To open the second half, Niagara scored the first three goals to seize control of the contest. Trailing 9-6, Lauren Ottensmeyer scored her first goal of the game to get the Guins within two. However, NU scored the next two goals building a 11-7 advantage. Just before the end of the third period, Jordan Miller's goal with 21 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 11-8.
YSU opened the fourth quarter with a Ali Korin tally to pull within two at 11-9, but Niagara scored the next five goals, two of which came a player up to pull away for the victory.
Niagara scored four player-up goals in the contest that featured 10 yellow cards. YSU won the draw controls 15-14. The Purple Eagles had 40 shots to YSU's 24 in the contest.
The Penguins are set to host Akron on Thursday at Farmers National Bank Field in what will be their 2022 Mid-American Conference opener. First draw against the Zips is set for 1 p.m.
