Women's Lacrosse Rolls to Second-Straight Home Victory

Box Score

The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team captured its second-consecutive home victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon at the Watson and Tressel Training Site, 19-6.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Red Flash fall to 0-1.

The YSU offense saw six different scorers on the day, including five with multi-goal performances. Natalie Calandra-Ryan, for a second-straight outing, led the Penguins offensive effort with five goals scored on eight total shots, while picking-up a pair of ground balls. Sydney Bumstead, Emma Carter, Erin Clark and Lauren Ottensmeyer each netted a hat trick of goals for YSU, with Ali Korin adding a solo goal.

Adding to her day, Clark tied a career-high and season-best five assists in a single game, while also grabbing three draw controls and two ground balls.

Mikaela Staranko made her season debut in the cage on the afternoon, playing the entire second half for YSU. Staranko posted a career-best five saves on eight shots faced during her 30-minute outing. Savannah Clarke started in goal for YSU and earned her second win of the season, adding six saves of her own on nine Red Flash shots.

Lizzie Fisher and Autumn McHenry each had a pair of goals scored for the Red Flash.

Just 38 ticks into the contest, Clark scored the first of her two unassisted goals to give the Penguins the early one-score advantage. The Red Flash would answer with a score of their own to knot the scoreboard at one goal apiece at the 11:03 mark of the opening quarter.

After a three-minute scoreless stretch by both squads, a goal by Calandra-Ryan at the 8:42 mark of the first quarter would ignite an 8-0 scoring run by the Penguins that was bookended by a Carter goal at the 8:39 point of the second quarter. During the span, SFU took four shots at the YSU cage, but came up empty.

The two teams each traded a pair of goals during the final six minutes of the opening half, as the Penguins headed into the break with an 11-3 lead.

Out of the halftime locker room, the Penguins would outscore the Red Flash 4-1 in the third quarter, following a pair of goals from Ottensmeyer, and lone goals from Carter and S. Bumstead. YSU entered the final quarter of play owning a commanding 15-4 advantage.

In the fourth, the Penguins tabbed their third-straight four-goal quarter, while holding the Red Flash to two goals at the 13:54 and 5:12 marks to seal the victory.

YSU outshot Saint Francis 34-21 for the game, including 29-17 in the shots on goal category.
