Youngstown State plays its final game of 2022 when it hosts defending Horizon League regular-season champion Purdue Fort Wayne, Saturday, Dec. 31. Tipoff is set for 2:45 p.m. at Beeghly Center and the game will be broadcast on 570 WKBN and ESPN+. This is the third of three basketball doubleheaders with the Youngstown State women's basketball team.

Last Time Out
Youngstown State picked up its 10th win over the season with an 85-71 win over Horizon League foe Cleveland State on Dec. 29,. Brandon Rush scored a game-high 21 points and made four 3-pointers to lead the Penguins. Dwayne Cohill and Adrian Nelson had 16 points each and Malek Green poured in 15 points.
Rush Reaches 1,000
Brandon Rush scored the 1,000 point of his career against Cleveland State and now has 1,002 career points. He is the second Penguin to reach the 1,000-point plateau this season. Malek Green, who has 1,134 career points, reached the mark on Nov. 20, 2022, against Navy.

The Penguins have won three straight and are 5-1 over their last six games. During that span, Youngstown State averaged 88.3 points per game and shot 51.5 percent from the floor, 40.1 percent from 3-point range, and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line. Purdue Fort Wayne enters the game with an overall record of 9-5 and a 1-2 mark in the Horizon League. The Mastodons had a five-game winning streak snapped on Dec. 29 after a 75-70 loss to Robert Morris. PFW also lost to Detroit Mercy, 75-65, on Dec. 1 and defeated Oakland in overtime, 79-73, on Dec. 3. Leading the Mastodons is Jarred Godfey with 16.0 points per game while Bobby Planutis is averaging 12.9 points per contest.

Series History
This is the ninth meeting between Youngstown State and Purdue Fort Wayne in a series that date back to 2002. The series is tied, 4-4, but the Mastodons have won the last two contests.The Mastodons swept the season series last year winning 71-61 at Beeghly Center and 82-71 in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Penguins last two victories happened in 2021 with an 84-78 win and a 72-70 triumph at the Beeghly Center.
Last Time vs. Purdue Fort Wayne
William Dunn scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a tough decision to Purdue Fort Wayne, 81-72, on Jan. 23, 2022, at Memorial Coliseum. The Penguins, who made a season-high 12 3-pointers, erased a 14-point first half deficit and tied the game as late as the 6:52 mark but could not over come the Mastodons in the closing minutes. Tevin Olison scored 17 points and made a career-high five 3-pointers and Dwayne Cohill added 12 points for the Penguins, who shot 57.1 percent from the field. Dunn also made three 3-pointers.

Youngstown State is off to one of the best starts in its Division I history. The Penguins 10-4 record is tied for the best start after 14 games since 1981-82. It also marks just the fourth time since 1981-82 that Youngstown State has won 10 times in its first 14 contests. The last time YSU started 10-4 was in 1997-98.
