
Penguins Set to Take On CSCAA Open Water National Championship

Eight members of the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming programs will make their way to the CSCAA Open Water National Championship hosted by Florida International University in Biscayne Bay, Fla. on Sunday morning.
41 schools fielding 239 athletes from all across the country will compete at the event. The men's 5k is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. and include 98 athletes. The women's 5k race will follow at 10 a.m. and field 141 athletes.

The Guins are coming off an impressive, record-setting performance at the Miami (OH) Invitational. These eight Penguins turned in notable performances alongside the rest of the swimming and diving squads.
At the meet, Gavin Webb broke the 500 free school record with a time of 4:25.95, finishing second in the event. He earned a victory in the 1650 free, clocking a 15:25.41 to finish over 15 seconds ahead of the competition. Webb also finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 3:54.37.
Crispy Barton finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.78 and was fourth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:01.19. He also picked up an 11th-place finish in the 500 free, swimming a 4:38.27.
Brenden Reeves picked up a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:03.03 as well as a 10th-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking a 1:51.22. He also placed 15th in the 200 fly, swimming a time of 1:54.95.
Dominic Bono clocked a 16:08.28 in the 1650 free to finish sixth and was eighth in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.00. He also finished 12th in the 400 IM, swimming a 4:07.19, as well as placed 16th in the 200 IM, clocking a 1:54.70.
Christian Taylor clocked a 16:20.09 to finish 11th in the 1650 free and finished 19th in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.42. He also picked up a 23rd-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.92.
Freshman Miriam Frass led the women's team with a fourth-place finish in the 1650 free, clocking a 17:12.95. She also came in seventh in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.97. She also swam a 5:01.36 in the 500 free to place 11th overall.
Hailey Clark finished 10th in the 1650 free with a time of 17:36.00 while Brooke Schuette finished 12th, swimming a 17:53.34.
Schuette and Clark also finished 23rd and 24th in the 500 free, respectively. Schuette clocked a 5:08.83 while Clark was just behind with a 5:10.91. Schuette also picked up a 23rd-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.10. Clark also finished 22nd in the 200 breast, clocking a 2:31.43.

The Penguins will return to action with a home diving meet facing Duquesne scheduled for Friday, January 6 at 11 a.m. in the Beeghly Natatorium. On Saturday, January 7, the swimming squads will return to the pool when the women square off against Duquesne while the men face Niagara at Towers Pool in Pittsburgh, Pa.
