Morgantown, W. Va. - The Youngstown State men's and women's diving programs delivered strong performances at the three-day West Virginia Invite that concluded on Saturday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
Sophomore Simon Iwanonkiw was the Penguins' top scorer in the men's one-meter and three-meter dives, and freshman Zachary Lao led the way in the platform dive, finishing fourth and scoring a 219.00 to break the YSU record.
YSU just missed qualifying for the consolation finals in the men's one-meter dive, finishing three divers at 17th, 18th, and 19th. Iwanonkiw led the way in 17th with a score of 237.65. Cody Thill finished in 18th, scoring a 229.70, and Lao was just behind in 19th with a score of 229.45.
For the women, Kayla Wrasman and Tess Weiskopf led the Guins in the three-meter dive. Wrasman finished 27th with a score of 219.95, and Weiskopf scored a 216.35 to finish 28th.
YSU's top two finishers in the women's one-meter dive were Weiskopf and Ellen Linscheid. Weiskopf scored a 214.05 to finish 33rd while Linscheid finished 38th with a score of 207.40.
In the men's three-meter dive, Iwanonkiw scored a 235.25 in his 20th-place finish, and Brooks Adams was 21st with a score of 221.40.
After Lao in the platform dive, Iwanonkiw finished seventh with a score of 210.00. In the women's platform dive, freshman Natalie Weisman finished eighth, scoring a 165.35, while Dasha Toth was 14th with a score of 145.35.
In the diving team events, the YSU women's squad made up of Linscheid, Emma Schum, and Weissman finished sixth with a score of 220.30. The team of Weiskopf, Wrasman, and Toth was just behind, scoring a 219.75 to place seventh. The men's squad of Iwanonkiw, Lao, and Adams finished fourth in the team event with a score of 220.15.
The swimming and diving programs will return to action together as they head to the three-day Miami (OH) Invitational at the Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio beginning on Thursday, December 1.
