Bowling Records Three Wins in Low-Scoring Day at Millsboro Lanes

The Youngstown State bowling team won its first three matches and had to grind through tough lane conditions that affected the entire field on Friday at the Hawk Classic. The tournament is being hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore at Millsboro Lanes in Delaware.
In a field featuring 14 of the top 23 teams in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Poll, no team averaged 190 over the five Baker matches on Friday. There were only five match totals above 1,000 on the day.
Youngstown State posted a pinfall of 4,576, which tied for the seventh-best total. Even with the total that is well below YSU's typical scoring, the Penguins are just 171 pins out of first and 56 behind the fourth-place team.
"I liked our energy today and thought we did a solid job overall of maintaining the proper perspective given the conditions that are out there," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "With an increased sample size tomorrow and staying focused on our process, I like our chances to make a great run this weekend."
The Penguins topped No. 11 Mount St. Mary's 977-912 to begin the day, and that was the highest total in the house in the opening match. YSU then beat Mercyhurst 873-848 and Wilmington 898-861 in a pair of low-scoring matches to improve to 3-0.
YSU was back over 900 in its fourth match but fell 988-932 to No. 7 North Carolina A&T, and No. 12 Delaware State prevailed 910-896 in the final match of the afternoon.
Youngstown State will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 9:55 a.m. Action will be streamed live on BowlTV or the YSUsports YouTube channel.
