Kenosha, Wis. – The Youngstown State bowling team went 2-2 in head-to-head matches and finished its three days at the MOTIV Ladyjack Classic in sixth place. Stephen F. Austin hosted the event at Sheridan Lanes.
The Penguins were sixth after the first 10 games of qualifying, and that's where they ultimately finished.
Youngstown State won its first two matches of the day and dropped its last two to finish with a 9-5 head-to-head record at the event.
In five-game Baker matches, YSU topped Carthage 1,009-895 and North Central 1,052-826. The Penguins then fell 1,004-977 against No. 1 McKendree to finish qualifying. Youngstown State was sixth after qualifying, 17 pins behind No. 3 Nebraska, and the Penguins lost 4-0 to the Huskers in a best-of-seven Baker match to determine which team would be fifth and which would be sixth.
"We are growing together and elevating together each day," said Penguins head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm very proud of our effort this weekend. The shotmaking was outstanding, and there are a lot of positives to build from and some little things to clean up as we prepare for Delaware. I can't wait to get back at it Tuesday."
McKendree captured the tournament championship by outlasting Vanderbilt in seven games, and Arkansas State beat Stephen F. Austin in the battle for third and fourth place.
Youngstown State will be faced with the challenge of competing at tournaments on back-to-back weekends for the first time this season. The Penguins will head to Delaware for the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic next weekend in a three-day competition that will conclude YSU's fall schedule.
