The Youngstown State men's golf team concluded its fall season on Tuesday with a ninth-place finish in the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate hosted by Stetson at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Penguins posted a three-round team total of 904 to finish three strokes back of eighth-place North Carolina A&T and eight strokes in front of 10th-place UT Rio Grande Valley. On Monday, YSU recorded team scores of 303 and 301 in the first round two rounds, respectively. The Guins finished the tournament with a 300 in the final session on Tuesday.
Cade Kreps (75-71-80), Bryan Kordupel (77-77-72) and Ryan Sam (78-73-75) each carded a three-round score of 226 to finish tied for 27th.
Kreps was tied for 11th after firing rounds of 75 and 71 on Monday. The senior's opening-round 75 featured 12 pars and a pair of birdies while his second-round 71 included 11 pars and four birdies. Kreps' one-under-par 71 in the second session matched the lowest round of his career. The Boardman, Ohio, native shot a three-under-par 33 on the front nine while making par or better on 13 of his final 15 holes during the second round.
Kordupel's first-round 77 featured 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 9 while his second-round 77 included 15 pars. The fifth-year senior's even-par 72 in the final round on Tuesday featured 12 pars and three birdies as he fired a one-under-par 35 on the front nine.
Sam's opening-round 78 included six pars and four birdies while his second-round 73 featured six pars and six birdies. The true freshman carded an even-par 36 on the front nine as part of his one-over-par 73 in the second session. Sam's final-round 75 saw him card nine pars and three birdies as he shot a one-over-par 37 on the back nine.
Dean Austalosh finished tied for 37th with a three-round 230 (74-80-76). The junior's first-round 74 included nine pars and four birdies as he notched an even-par 36 on the front nine. Austalosh's second-round 80 featured eight pars and two birdies while his final-round 76 included 11 pars and a pair of birdies. The Campbell, Ohio, native fired an even-par 36 on the back nine while making par or better on nine of his final 11 holes during the final session. Austalosh was inserted into the lineup to replace Brian Terlesky, who was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Cole Christman finished tied for 48th with a three-round total of 234 (77-80-77). The senior's opening-round 77 featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 8 while his second-round 80 included 10 pars. Christman's final-round 77 featured 13 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 5. The Boardman, Ohio, native made par or better on 14 of his final 16 holes during the final round.
Stetson claimed the tournament title by a staggering 52 strokes at 32 under par with a three-round team score of 832. Florida A&M finished as the runner up with an 884 while Howard placed third with an 886. Matt Gauntlett (70-68-70) and Truman Keppy (69-68-71) of Stetson each finished with a three-round score of 208 to share medalist honors.
Youngstown State will now pause from competition until the beginning of its spring season. YSU's full spring schedule will be announced in the near future.
