The Youngstown State volleyball team couldn't slow down red-hot Wright State on Friday evening as the Raiders won in three sets for their 12th straight victory. The set scores at C.J. McLin Gymnasium were 25-13, 25-22, 25-15.
Wright State, which has now won 24 consecutive sets, improved to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in Horizon League play. The Raiders held the Penguins to a season-low .067 attack percentage behind 10 blocks. Youngstown State is now 8-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Paula Gursching had 10 kills to lead the Penguins, but the Raiders keyed in on her and also forced the outside hitter into 10 attack errors. Josi Borum and Abbie Householder each had six kills, and Householder recorded a team-high 13 digs.
Sam Ott had 11 kills to lead Wright State, which hit .235 as a team. Callie Martin registered five of the Raiders' eight aces, and she served 11 straight points in the opening set as the Raiders took a 12-0 lead. Wright State went on to take the opening set 25-13.
Youngstown State gave the Raiders a fight in the second set and led as late as 14-13 on an ace by Isabel Schaefbauer. Wright State went on another run behind Martin's serve to take a 21-16 lead, and the Raiders led 24-18 after an extended 11-4 run. The Penguins saved four straight set points to get within 24-22 before Ott had a kill to finish the set.
The Penguins led 11-9 in the third after a Gursching kill, but Wright State had three blocks during an 8-1 run to go up 17-12. Youngstown State got no closer than four the rest of the night.
YSU will try to earn a split this weekend as it heads south to take on Northern Kentucky on Saturday. The match at Regents Hall will begin at 4 p.m.
