The Youngstown State bowling team won its first four head-to-head matches and finished 4-1 on a solid opening day of the 2022 MOTIV Penguin Classic supported by Litwin Paint & Supplies. The tournament is being held at YSU's home facility, Holiday Bowl in Struthers, Ohio.
The Penguins averaged 201.6 over their 25 Baker games, totaling 5,040 pins. That was the third-highest total in the field behind Arkansas State (5,210) and Nebraska (5,178).
"Today was a solid start to our season," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm very proud of how we stayed positive, stayed together, and kept our process simple throughout the day. We also gathered some solid information and are very much looking forward to the weekend. I like our chances to make a run."
The Penguins topped Saint Francis U 1,054-959 in the opening match of the tournament, and they followed that with a 1,016-997 victory over No. 6 Arkansas State. The Red Wolves led by 34 through the first four games of the match, but YSU held a 243-190 advantage in game five.
Youngstown State was back over 1,000 again in its third match in a 1,038-831 win over No. 20 Lewis, and all nine Penguins on the roster bowled in a 956-799 victory over Walsh. YSU dropped its final match of the day to No. 3 Nebraska, 1,044-976.
