Penguins Fall to IUPUI in Overtime, 76-68

IUPUI's Anna Mortag hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and the Jaguars outscored the Penguins 15-7 in the extra period to win 76-68 on Sunday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

Senior Lilly Ritz posted her fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Penguins. Sophomore Malia Magestro scored a career-high 19 points and tied a career best with five 3-pointers, and Paige Shy added 12 points.

IUPUI had five players scoring in double figures led by Macee Williams' 16 points. Rachel Kent scored 14 points and made three 3-pointers, including one with 10.9 seconds left that preceded Mortag's.

Youngstown State saw its seven-game winning streak come to a halt, and it let an opportunity to separate at the top of the conference standings slip away. The Penguins are now 15-2 overall and 9-1 in Horizon League play, while IUPUI is 10-5 overall and 7-3 against the conference. YSU remains in first place ahead of Northern Kentucky and Cleveland State, which are both 5-2.

The Penguins shot just 33.8% from the field and went 9-for-35 from beyond the arc, and they were 11-for-18 from the free-throw line. IUPUI held a big shooting edge at 52%, and the Jaguars were 16-for-19 from the free-throw line. YSU had just eight turnovers compared to IUPUI's 22, but the Penguins had three turnovers in the final 40 seconds of regulation and two more in overtime.

The Penguins, who trailed 40-35 with 3:19 left in third quarter, outscored the Jaguars 21-7 over the next 12 minutes and held a nine-point lead, 56-47, with 1:28 left in regulation.

Ritz began the fourth quarter with a layup from Magestro and knotted the game at 41-41 with 9:02 left. After the team's exchanged baskets, Shy buried a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Penguins a 46-43 lead. YSU didn't trail again until overtime.

Two Chelsea Olson free throws put the Penguins up 52-45 with 4:59 remaining, and Magestro buried her fourth 3-pointer of the game with 2:12 left to put YSU up eight points, 55-47. The largest lead of 56-47 came when Olson split a pair of free throws with 1:28 on the clock.

YSU's lead was 60-52 when Mady Aulbach made two free throws with 51 ticks left, but IUPUI's furious rally started on the next possession when Madison Wise had a three-point play 11 seconds later. The Penguins turned the ball over on their next two possessions, and Olson was whistled for her fifth foul after an IUPUI offensive rebound with 14.1 seconds left.

Kent's 3 got the Jaguars within two at 60-58 with 10.9 seconds left, and Aulbach split a pair of free throws with 7.9 seconds remaining to push the YSU lead to three, 61-58. Mortag's tying 3-pointer came in the left corner on a pass from Natalie Andersen after a Jaguars timeout. The Penguins turned the ball over with on the ensuing inbounds play, but the Jaguars could not get a shot off.

IUPUI scored the first six points of overtime to take a 67-61 lead with 3:10 left, and the margin extended to 72-62 with 1:37 left. Megan Callahan hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, but the Jaguars made four straight free throws to push the lead to 11. Magestro banked in a 3-pointer for the game's final basket.

All four quarters of regulation were played within two points of each other, and the teams were tied at 10-10 after the first period.

The Penguins jumped out to a 7-3 lead after a 3-pointer by Olson and a pair of baskets by Ritz. IUPUI scored the next seven points to take a 10-7 lead at the 3:19 mark. Shy followed with a 3-pointer that tied the game with 3:00 to go, and that was the last points of the first quarter.

The Jaguars scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a 16-10 lead before Magestro hit a 3-pointer at the 7:05 mark of the stanza. The Penguins went 5:55 without a made field goal.

Magestro, who scored 11 points in the second quarter, hit her second 3-pointer of the game to get the Penguins within two, 18-16 at the 6:14 mark. Her third 3-pointer cut the Jags lead to 21-19, and a reverse layup by Olson got the Penguins within one, 24-23.

Andersen's 3 extended IUPUI's lead to 27-23 at the 1:58 mark, and Magestro's layup with 33 seconds left cut the IUPUI lead to 27-25 and ended the scoring in the first half.

Ritz scored the Penguins' first six points of the second half and gave YSU a 31-29 lead with 7:58 to go. The Jaguars scored five straight points to take a 40-35 lead later in the quarter, and the margin was 41-39 heading into the fourth.

The Penguins will try to get back on the winning track when they visit Robert Morris on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Moon Township, Pa.
