Cox Has Career-High 10 Kills in Loss to CSU

Junior outside hitter Ellie Cox had a career-high 10 kills, but the Youngstown State volleyball team fell 3-0 to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-20.
Cox's 10 kills came in 25 attempts, and she led the Penguins with a .320 attack percentage. Reilly Seagroves had 11 digs, and Paula Gursching and Josi Borum added six kills apiece. It was the first time in her career that Gursching was held below 10 kills.
Cleveland State's London Portis had 16 kills in 24 swings and hit .667 to key the Vikings' offense. The visitors had a 44-31 edge in kills, a 9-3 advantage in aces and a 6-0 lead in blocks.
The Vikings went on big runs in all three sets as they improved to 2-0 in Horizon League play. Cleveland State scored six straight points as part of an 11-3 run to end the first set after the score was tied at 14. CSU then went on a 9-4 spurt in the second set to turn a 12-10 lead into a 21-14 advantage and an eventual 25-19 win.
The Viking run in the third set came when the Penguins held an 18-13 advantage. After a break in play due to a challenge, Cleveland State scored seven straight points as part of a 12-2 run to end the match.
Youngstown State will continue its four-match homestand with two more contests Beeghly Center next weekend. YSU will host Purdue Fort Wayne on Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. and IUPUI on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
