Box Score In a hard-fought contest, the Youngstown State women's lacrosse team fell to Mid-American Conference frontrunner Robert Morris on Saturday's Senior Day at Farmers National Bank Field, 23-12.
The game acted as the final home showing for the Penguins (2-7, 2-7 MAC) at the Covelli Sports Complex for the spring 2021 season.
Prior to first draw, Youngstown State's lone senior, Elicia Wells, was recognized for her efforts during her one-year stint as the Penguins starting goalkeeper. Wells played all 60 minutes for YSU in the cage in the game, posting a game-high 12 saves on 35 Colonials' shots. Appearing in all nine games on the season, Wells has tallied 115 saves for YSU. She has logged a season-long save percentage of 44.2% on 334 shots faced and bolstered the Penguins to a MAC-best 12.89 saves per game.
Three Penguins (Aryss Lindsey, Emma Carter, Erin Clark) led the YSU scoring effort, each tallying hat trick performances en route to the 12-goal team outing. For Clark, she now leads the Penguins' fleet in goals scored on the season, overtaking teammate Lauren Ottensmeyer's mark with 17 scores during the 2021 campaign.
Adding to her Saturday stat line, Clark also tabbed a team-high four ground balls to boost her team-leading mark to 20 on the season. Carter, Lindsey and Wells also posted multi-ground ball showings during Saturday's action with two apiece.
At midfield, Abby Yesko grabbed an impressive nine draw controls for YSU, an individual-best. Not to be largely outdone, Carter and Lindsey also added four draw controls apiece.
Robert Morris scored early and often in the first half, taking an 11-3 lead into the break. The Colonials jumped out to a 9-0 lead, before Clark netted an unassisted goal to get YSU on the board with 11:09 remaining in the half. Following a pair of Colonials' scores, the Penguins ended the initial 30 minutes of action on a 2-0 run, capitalizing off a pair of free-position shots by Carter and Taylor Jones.
Out of the halftime locker room, the Penguins surged as they cashed in on another pair of free-position attempts while scoring an unassisted goal to cut into the Colonials' lead. Clark and Carter scored during the stint.
After a two-goal answer by RMU, Taylor Jones netted the second score of her two-goal outing, this time unassisted. Just 90-ticks later the Colonials would re-up their lead with a score of their own.
YSU found some life at the midway through the second half, scoring three unanswered goals and bringing the Robert Morris lead to just a four-goal spread – 14-10. A trio of Penguins scored during the stretch (Lindsey, Carter, Abby Yesko). However, the Colonials would put together a pair of four-goal runs on two separate occasions to earn the victory 23-12 and remain unscathed in MAC play.
