Following a pair of unassisted goals to begin the game, Lauren Ottensmeyer helped the Penguins out to a 2-1 lead at the 27:02 mark. After an Akron score to even the score at two goals apiece, Taylor Jones and Aryss Lindsey found the back of the net on a pair of free-position shots to give YSU a two-goal advantage halfway through the first half.
The Zips strung together a two-goal surge to even the score at four prior to Jocelyn Fike scoring her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Shannyn Cullen to give Youngstown the lead 5-4.
The Guins headed into the halftime locker room with an 8-6 lead after ending the half on a 3-2 run.
