Penguins Sweep IUPUI To Open HL Play

The Youngstown State men's tennis team defeated IUPUI 6-1 on Sunday earning a sweep over the Jaguars this weekend at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Penguins improve to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play while IUPUI falls to 4-7 and 0-2.
For the second straight day, the doubles point was decided after some lengthly play. Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran won 6-3 at No. 1 while the Jaguars earned a 6-3 win at No. 3. At No. 2, Joao Garretto and David Alvarez Moreno won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4) to take the point.
Three of the six singles contest went three sets with YSU winning two. The Guins won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5. At No. 1, Vardakis rebounded from a Saturday defeat to win 7-6, 6-4 over Alex Jochim. At No. 4, Garretto cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Colton Morehart. In action at No.5, Moreno beat Blessing Benibo, 7-5, 6-3.
At No. 3, Gran bounced back after dropping his first set 6-4 to Sean Bailey to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-1. At. No. 6, Asier Pena Ibanez beat Nick Moody, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Laurentiu Mandocescu dropped a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 decision at No. 2.
The Penguins return to action next weekend when they play host to UIC at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve on Saturday and Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
