Penguins Open Final Home Weekend With 7-0 Win Over UIC

The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up an impressive 7-0 win over UIC on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins improve to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play while the Flames are 1-11 and 0-3.
YSU picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The first to clinch was Laurentiu Mandocescu and Will Everett at three as the duo picked up a 6-2 win. At No. 2, Joao Garretto and David Alvarez Moreno earned a 6-4 win. Vasilis Vardakis and Erik Gran had a 5-2 lead at No. 1 when the point was clinched.
Playing his first singles match since Feb. 26, Everett picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles for the first YSU singles win. Moreno earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 while Gran's 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 clinched the victory. Garretto polished off a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 and his wins were followed by Vardakis at No. 1 - 6-4, 6-3 - and Mandocescu at No. 2 - 6-4, 6-3.
YSU will honor its three seniors - Vardakis, Garretto, Baher El Mekawi - prior to Sunday's match. First serve vs. the Flames at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
