
Volleyball Falls Twice to Complete Spring Season

The Youngstown State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Oakland on Monday as both teams completed the 2021 spring season with a doubleheader at Beeghly Center. The Golden Grizzlies won the opening match 25-21, 25-22, 25-13, and took the nightcap 25-17, 25-19, 25-13.
All 18 Penguins who dressed played, and Amber Morris made her first career start while Lauren Lask made her YSU debut. The doubleheader also marked the end of the careers for seniors Libbie Darling, Alyssa Oswald and Margaux Thompson. Thompson posted 27 digs in the doubleheader to increase her career total to 1,239, which is the fourth-most in program history.
In the first match, Nadia Pace and Josi Borum both had seven kills as the Penguins pushed the Golden Grizzlies the first two sets. Thompson had 19 of her 27 digs, and Alexia Byrnes added 16 digs.
The Penguins led 16-15 in the opening set after a kill from Borum, and the score was tied at 19 following a kill by Morris. The Golden Grizzlies scored four straight points to take a 23-19 advantage en route to a 25-21 win.
Oakland scored the first seven points of the second set, but YSU fought back and got within two at 13-11 after a Borum kill. The margin got as close as 21-20 and 23-22 before Oakland held on for a 25-22 win. The Golden Grizzlies then took a 7-1 lead in the third and won 25-13.
Borum, Pace and Amanda Lebioda each had six kills in the second match of the day.
The Golden Grizzlies closed the first set on a 7-2 run, and they scored seven straight points midway through the second set to turn a 12-11 deficit into an 18-12 advantage. Similarly in the third, Oakland scored six straight points to take a 17-9 lead after YSU got within 11-9.
Brittany Welch had 11 kills for Oakland, and Lindsay Wightman had 30 digs in the opener. Patti Cesarini had 11 kills while Wightman added 22 more digs in the second match.
