Freshmen Lead Bowling to Two More Wins on Saturday

Freshmen Madyson Marx and Kirsten Moore helped the Youngstown State bowling team earn two more victories and stay in the top four of the standings on Saturday at the Mid-Winter Invitational. The tournament is being held at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
Marx posted the top individual total in the field on Saturday with a five-game total of 1,160, and she has a 12-pin lead on the second-place bowler with one game remaining on Sunday. Moore knocked down 1,068 pins and ranks 15th, and Sarah Florence is also above 1,000 at 1,032.
With one more game of qualifying on Sunday morning before bracket play, Youngstown State remains fourth in the team standings with a total pinfall of 10,287 through 10 games. The Penguins have an 83-pin lead on No. 1 McKendree for the final spot in the top bracket.
"Overall, I'm pleased with how we competed all day long," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "The lanes were slightly different compared to yesterday, and I'm proud of the ladies for focusing on the process and staying disciplined. We will enjoy another relaxing evening together and be ready to elevate tomorrow. I like our chances to make a solid run."
Moore bowled a 236 as the Penguins opened team play on Saturday with a 1,054-983 victory over No. 23 Wisconsin-Whitewater, and YSU followed with a 994 total in an uncontested match. Youngstown State then had its best effort of the day against No. 5 Nebraska with a 1,138-1,096 victory over the Huskers. Marx turned in a career-best 267, and Florence added a 246 while Emma Wrenn registered a 234.
The Penguins fell 1,039-935 to top-ranked McKendree in their fourth match of the day, and YSU and No. 16 Stephen F. Austin had to go to a tiebreaker that the Lumberjacks won 107-74. Moore had a 254, and Marx bowled a 241 as both teams had a 1,054 through regulation.
Youngstown State's will open play on Sunday with a traditional match against Drury at 9:25 a.m.
