Box Score 2 The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Wright State on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium. The Penguins suffered a 2-1 seven-inning loss in game one before falling 14-5 in game two.
Wright State has now won seven straight games to improve 7-5 overall and 7-0 in Horizon League play. YSU has dropped three straight contests to fall to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in league action.
Game 1 Recap
Sammy Sass hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Wright State to a 2-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Penguins scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth when Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit a solo home run over the wall in right field. O'Shaughnessy's home run, his second of the season, was YSU's first hit of the game.
The Raiders grabbed the lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the home half of the sixth inning. Quincy Hamilton was hit by a pitch with one out, and Tyler Black followed with a single to center field. Each runner moved up 90 feet on a double steal before YSU starter Collin Floyd got Zane Harris to strike out swinging for the second out of the inning. Sass then delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit with a two-out, two-run single to right field that sored Hamilton and Black.
Floyd suffered the hard-luck loss after holding the Raiders scoreless over the first five innings. The senior southpaw allowed the two runs in the sixth on only four hits and struck out six batters over 5.2 innings. Floyd recorded a strikeout in six different frames, and he retired the Raiders in order in the fourth.
Wright State starter Bradley Brehmer allowed one run on two hits and fanned six batters without a walk to earn the seven-inning complete game victory. The sophomore right-hander retired the Penguins in order in each of the first four innings as he sat down the first 13 batters he faced.
YSU got a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth when Nick Caruso singled to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lucas Nasonti. However, Brehmer was able to strike out Blaze Glenn and get Phillip Glasser to ground out to get out of the jam.
Black, Sass, Jay Luikart and Gehrig Anglin each had hits in the contest for Wright State.
YSU reliever Chad Coles came on in the bottom of the sixth to record the final out of the inning.
Game 2 Recap
Turner Grau went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run as the Youngstown State baseball team dropped a 14-5 decision to Wright State in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium.
Grau, Braeden O'Shaughnessy and Padraig O'Shaughnessy each had two hits to lead the Penguins offensively. Grau matched his career high with three RBIs as he sent a three-run blast over the wall in right field in the top of the eighth inning. Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while his brother Braeden O'Shaughnessy was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored.
Blake Benyo, Nasonti and Glasser also had base hits, and Glasser stole two bases. Dylan Swarmer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Raiders jumped in front with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning. Sass reached with a one-out single and Luikart followed with a double to right center. After YSU starter Nick Perez struck out Alex Alders for the second out of the inning, Konner Piotto reached on a fielding error that allowed Sass and Luikart to score and give Wright State a 2-0 lead.
Wright State added to its advantage with a pair of runs on two hits in the home half of the third. Hamilton homered down the right field line with one out and Black followed with a double to left center. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Black scored on a sacrifice fly by Zane Harris to make it a 4-0 game.
The Penguins cut the Raiders' lead to 4-2 with two runs on three hits in top of the fourth inning. Glasser drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a single to right field by Padraig O'Shaughnessy. Braeden O'Shaughnessy followed with an RBI single to center that scored Glasser for YSU's first run. After Grau reached on an infield single to load the bases, Swarmer drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to fight field.
The Raiders responded by scoring four times on two hits and four walks in the bottom half of the fourth. Luikart, Alders and Piotto each walked to load the bases, and Alders eventually scored on a wild pitch. After Damon Dues drew a walk to load the bases again, Hamilton cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right field line to increase Wright State's lead to 8-2.
WSU pushed its lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Alders drew a two-out walk and Piotto followed with a two-run home run to right center. Harris hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, Luikart hit a solo home run in the seventh and Sass notched a two-run double in the eighth to round out the scoring for Wright State.
The Penguins scored three times in the top of the eighth on Grau's three-run homer. Padraig O'Shaughnessy and Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit back-to-back two-out singles to set up Grau's second blast of the season.
Wright State starter Alex Theis allowed two runs on four hits and struck out three batters over 3.2 innings of work. He retired the side in order in the second and third innings as he sat down eight straight batters at one point. Sam Wirsing was responsible for three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings of relief while Riley Perlich worked a scoreless ninth inning.
Perez surrendered six runs, four of them earned, on four hits and fanned four batters over three innings. Four YSU relievers combined to allow eight runs on six hits over the final five frames. Travis Perry struck out a season-high five batters in three innings of relief.
Hamilton, Black, Sass and Luikart each collected two hits for Wright State, and Hamilton recorded a game-high four RBIs. The Raiders scored in seven straight frames between the second and eighth innings.
