UIC showcased its offensive prowess on Tuesday with a .380 attack percentage and 52 kills in a three-set victory over the Youngstown State volleyball team on Tuesday at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-21, 25-11, 25-15.
Paola Santiago had a match-high 14 kills in 28 attempts, and Becca Oldendorf had 11 kills in 17 swings for the Flames, who came into the week ranking third in the country in kills and 13th in attack percentage.
Josi Borum, Amanda Lebioda and Alyssa Oswald had six kills apiece to lead the Penguins. YSU had 30 kills on a .139 attack percentage.
UIC remained unbeaten through three weeks of the season at 6-0, and Youngstown State dropped to 2-4.
The Flames got off to good starts in all three sets, scoring the first five points in the first two sets and jumping out to a 7-1 advantage in the third. UIC won the second and third sets comfortably, but the first set was decided by four points.
After allowing the 5-0 head start, YSU got within a point at 12-11 on an Aimee Beaupre kill. UIC scored six of the next seven points to take an 18-12 lead, and YSU got as close as three points three times late before the Flames prevailed. The Penguins had four serving errors in the opening set, including one at 24-21.
YSU hit .357 in the opening set, but it hit a combined .055 over the final two sets. UIC hit .364 in the opening set, .600 in the second and .244 in the third.
Youngstown State has just two more matches in February before an eight-match March. The Penguins will play twice at Wright State on Monday and Tuesday, and their bye week is Feb. 22-23.
