The Youngstown State bowling team won three head-to-head matches and held on to the fifth spot in the standings on day two at the Big Red Invitational. The tournament is being hosted by Nebraska at Hollywood Bowl in Lincoln, Neb.
The eighth-ranked Penguins topped 1,000 in each of their first four matches and totaled 5,126 pins on the day. That was the fifth-highest total in the 11-team field. YSU increased its hold on the fifth spot in the standings, and it will enter Sunday with a 93-pin lead on sixth-place Maryville. YSU is 206 pins behind fourth-place Vanderbilt.
"The ladies did a great job keeping the positive and powerful energy flowing today," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "We left a handful of pocket splits throughout the day and made a few strategic mistakes the last match, so even though we were 100 pins less than yesterday, I thought we bowled just as well overall. We will bring what we learned from today into tomorrow and finish strong."
With three more traditional games on tap Sunday, junior Emma Wrenn is 11th in the individual standings with a 1,093. Madyson Marx is five spots behind Wrenn in 16th with a 1,062, and Emma Dockery totaled 1,000 for 29th place. Sarah Florence bowled a 941 over five games, and Kirsten Moore totaled 864 over four games. Moore's average of 216 was the second-highest on the team.
The Penguins lost their opening match on Saturday 1,139-1,013 to No. 3 Arkansas State, but they responded to win their next three matches. YSU had its highest total of the day in a 1,105-959 victory over Quincy, and it followed with 1,038-923 and 1,062-949 wins over No. 19 Valparaiso and Upper Iowa. Youngstown State dropped the final match 1,008-908 to No. 2 Vanderbilt. The 1,105 total against Quincy was the third-highest in program history.
Youngstown State will bowl in an uncontested match to start Sunday, and two more traditional matches will follow. The first match begins at 9:55 a.m.
