Walk-Off Home Run Lifts No. 11 LSU to 5-3 Win Over Penguins

Box Score

Cade Doughty hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift No. 11 LSU to a 5-3 win over the Youngstown State baseball team on Saturday at Alex Box Stadium.

After inducing a flyout to begin the home half of the ninth, YSU closer Gary Clift Jr. hit Dylan Crews with a pitch to put the winning run on base. Turner Grau made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory in left field for the second out of the inning before Crews was able to reach third on a failed pickoff attempt. Doughty followed by hitting his game-winning blast to left field on a 2-2 pitch.

Youngstown State falls to 1-6 with the loss while LSU improves to 5-1 with the victory. The Tigers have now won four consecutive games while the Penguins have dropped three straight.

Collin Floyd provided the Penguins with a solid outing as he allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out six batters over 6.1 innings in his second start of the season. The senior left-hander recorded at least one strikeout in four different frames, and he held the Tigers scoreless between the second and sixth innings.

Lucas Nasonti went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Penguins offensively. Grau, Phillip Glasser and Andre Good each doubled while Grau and Nick Caruso added an RBI.

Doughty went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead the Tigers while Tre' Morgan went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

LSU starter AJ Labas allowed just three hits and struck out six batters over five scoreless innings of work. Five Tigers relievers combined to surrender three runs on five hits over the final four frames. Alex Brady earned the victory after working a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

Trailing 3-1, the Penguins scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game and push the 11th-ranked Tigers to the brink.  Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a pinch-hit single with one out and Steven D'Eusanio reached with a two-out walk. Caruso and Nasonti followed with back-to-back RBI singles off Preseason All-American closer Devin Fontenot to even the score at 3-3.

LSU jumped in front early by scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Crews led off the frame with a double to left center and Morgan followed with a single to right field. Doughty then hit his own double to left center that plated Crews, and an RBI groundout by Cade Beloso allowed Morgan to score and put the Tigers ahead 2-0.

YSU climbed within a run in the top of the sixth inning when Blaze Glenn reached with a one-out walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Grau. Padraig O'Shaughnessy also singled during the inning.

The Tigers pushed their lead back to two runs in the home half of the seventh inning. Jake Wyeth hit a leadoff single and moved to second base on a sacrifice by Jordan Thompson. After Joel Hake came out of the bullpen and induced a groundout, Chad Coles took over on the mound and was greeted by Morgan who sent an RBI single to center field to give LSU a 3-1 advantage.

Youngstown State got the potential go-ahead run into scoring position in the top of the ninth inning. Glenn reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base with one out. However, Brady got Braeden O'Shaughnessy to foul out and Grau to strike out looking to end the threat.

Hake retired the only batter he faced in the seventh inning while Coles allowed no runs on two hits over 1.1 innings of relief. Clift Jr. was saddled with his first loss of the season after giving up the game-winning homer in the ninth.

Youngstown State will conclude its four-game weekend swing in Louisiana with a contest at Nicholls on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com and streamed free of charge on YouTube.
