Phoenix Edge Penguins in Five Sets on Friday

The Youngstown State volleyball battled Green Bay to extra points in the fifth set on Friday at Beeghly Center before falling to the Phoenix. The set scores were 15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14.
Paula Gursching tied her career high with 27 kills on 65 attempts, which were both match highs, and Amanda Lebioda and Ellie Cox complemented her well. Lebioda finished with 14 kills on 28 attempts, and Cox had a career-high 13 kills on just 21 attempts.
Setter Josi Borum had a career-high 53 and led a Penguins offense that hit .273.
Youngstown State had advantages of 68-59 in kills and 13-11 in aces, but Green Bay had a 12.5-4 edge in blocks.
Alexandra Zakutney led Green Bay with 20 kills on 43 attempts, and Shannon Coughlin had 18 kills.
The Penguins limited the Phoenix to a .062 attack percentage in the opening set as they cruised to a 25-15 set win, but Green Bay had three aces and three blocks in the second set to even the match. The visitors then had their best offensive set of the night with 13 kills without an error in 24 swings to take 2-1 lead, but Youngstown State didn't back down and countered with a 25-19 win in the fourth. YSU converted 17 of its 20 sideout opportunities in the fourth set, and Cox and Lebioda combined for eight kills in 13 attempts.
Green Bay had three aces and 2.5 blocks in the fifth set in which neither team led by more than two. Youngstown State's final lead came at 9-8 on a Cox kill, but the Phoenix scored four of the next five points to take a 12-10 lead. YSU tied the score at 12, 13 and 14 before Green Bay finished the match with a kill by Coughlin and a block by Rylee Boyd and Iro Chounta.
Youngstown State will conclude the 2021 season on Saturday as it hosts Milwaukee at 6 p.m. at Beeghly Center. Seniors Morgan Cleevely and Ashley Starzyk will have their careers celebrated after the match.
