Penguins Go 4-1 in Baker Play at Dezy Strong Classic

The Youngstown State bowling team battled tough lane conditions to win four matches and beat three ranked teams on the opening day of the DezyStrong Classic. The tournament began Friday at Coram Country Lanes in Coram, N.Y.
The Penguins won their first four head-to-head matches on Friday, which featured five Baker matches decided by total pinfall. In the overall team race, Youngstown State is sixth in the 16-team field with a five-game total of 4,618 pins.
"I'm proud of how the ladies did a great job playing their own game and staying in their zone together," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "This truly is a special group and we're having a lot of fun on and off the lanes. After a nice dinner, we'll go over our notes, get some much-needed rest, and come ready to play tomorrow."
Youngstown State began the day with a five-game total of 1,027, the third-highest match total by any team on Friday, in a 243-pin win over Bloomfield College. The Penguins then strung together three straight victories over opponents ranked in the NTCA Top 25 poll before a three-pin loss to No. 8 Fairleigh Dickinson to end the round. YSU beat No. 25 Adelphi, the tournament host, 843-812, No. 19 Monmouth 920-887 and No. 23 LIU 959-903. The Penguins lost a low-scoring bout between a pair of top-10 teams with the Knights, 872-869.
No. 4 Vanderbilt leads the field with 4,816 pins and averaged five pins more per game than any other team. FDU is second with 4,684 pins, which is just 66 pins higher than YSU's total.
The Penguins will bowl in five traditional matches on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Live video of all five matches will be streamed on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
