Gursching Posts 13 Kills in Three-Setter vs. NKU

Paula Gursching posted a match-high 13 kills as the Youngstown State volleyball team fell in straight sets to Northern Kentucky on Tuesday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-13, 25-11, 25-22.
Gursching's 13 kills came on 33 attempts, and the Penguins freshman hit .242. Josi Borum recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs, and she added an ace and two blocks. Caitlyn Jones led all players with 16 digs in her first career start at libero, and Amanda Lebioda contributed seven kills on a .333 attack percentage.
Northern Kentucky hit an impressive .376 for the match, and it hit at least .300 in all three sets. Anna Brinkmann led the Norse with 12 kills, and Abby Kanakry had nine kills without an error in 16 attempts.
NKU built early leads in each of the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead, but the Penguins pushed the Norse in the third set. Although Northern Kentucky led for the rest of the set after taking a 3-2 advantage, YSU was within one as late as 21-20 following a Lebioda kill. A kill from Katy Yopko gave NKU a sideout, and Lillian Leiner recorded the Norse's seventh ace of the match to make the score 23-20. Isidora Sisic had kills on two of the next three points, but Mirana Wucherer finished the match with a kill with the score 24-22.
Youngstown State will begin a four-match road stretch this weekend as it plays at Cleveland State and Oakland. The Penguins and Vikings will play in Cleveland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
