Penguins Suffer Four-Set Loss at Cleveland State

The Youngstown State volleyball team got 26 kills from outside hitters Paula Gursching and Amanda Lebioda, but Cleveland State won the last three sets of the match to win 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Woodling Gymnasium. The set scores were 18-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-19.
Gursching had a match-high 14 kills, seven of which came in 13 attempts in the opening set that the Penguins won 25-18. Lebioda contributed 12 kills on 17 attempts and registered an impressive .588 attack percentage. Caitlyn Jones had a match-best 17 digs, Aimee Beaupre had three blocks, and Josi Borum recorded 36 assists.
London Portis had 13 kills to lead the Vikings offensively, and Cleveland State recorded 13 aces.
YSU hit .448 in the opening set behind seven kills in 13 swings for Gursching. The Penguins scored the first two points and led the entire set. The lead reached eight four different times, the first of which came at 18-10 on a Borum ace.
Cleveland State responded by scoring seven of the first eight points of the second set, which it won 25-16, and the Vikings used an early 10-3 run in the third set on its way to a 25-12 win.
The fourth set had six ties and three lead changes, and the Penguins fell despite having a .370-.250 edge in attack percentage. The set was decided at the service line as the Vikings got 12 points from five aces and seven YSU serving errors. The Penguins' final lead was 8-7, but a serving error sparked an 8-2 run by the Vikings that YSU never recovered from. Of Cleveland State's 14 sideouts in the set, half came on YSU serving errors.
Youngstown State will travel to Oakland to play the Golden Grizzlies on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
