The Youngstown State bowling team battled Arkansas State to the 10th frame of game seven of the championship match but had to settle for second place at the MOTIV Penguin Classic. The tournament was held at Holiday Bowl in Struthers, Ohio.
The Penguins held the top seed heading into the bracket, but the second-seeded Red Wolves beat them twice on Sunday. Arkansas State won the opening match in six games, and YSU topped Duquesne in seven games to force a rematch for the title.
The Penguins won game one of the championship match, then battled from a 3-1 deficit to force a winner-take-all game seven. YSU had to work around three splits in game seven, but a strike by Kirsten Moore in the ninth gave the Penguins a chance in the 10th. Anchor Emma Wrenn went 8-spare and strike, and Faith Welch threw three strikes in the 10th to clinch the title for the Red Wolves.
"It was great being out there competing again together in front of family and friends. The energy in the building was electric all weekend, and we appreciate all the support," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "The loss stings a little, but we also checked off a lot of boxes this weekend. I love where this team is and where we are heading. We'll rest up tomorrow, reflect and go over our notes, and get back after it on Tuesday with our eyes on bringing our A-game to New York."
Youngstown State finished with a 9-4 record in head-to-head play for the tournament, and it led the 10-team field with a 197.2 average.
The Penguins' next tournament will be Oct. 29-31 at the Adelphi "Dezy Strong" Classic.
