Box Score Bowling Green struck late with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 2-1 on Tuesday at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins, who were playing their 2020 home opener, got a great starting effort from right-hander Bryce Warwick. The freshman right-hander allowed only one run on four hits and struck out a career-best four batters over a career-high 7.1 innings in a no decision. He retired the Falcons in order in three different frames and retired 11 straight batters at one point.
YSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth before BGSU plated the deciding two runs in the eighth. The Falcons improved to 2-11 with the victory while the Penguins fall to 7-7.
Tyler Ross began the top of the eighth with a bunt single to third base and advanced to second on a groundout. After Warwick departed in favor of Casey Marshalwitz, Jake Wilson hit an RBI triple to right center field that evened the score. After Marshalwitz got the second out of the inning with another groundout, he was relieved by Joel Hake. After Kyle Gurney walked, Adam Furnas hit an RBI single to right field that plated Wilson for what proved to be the winning run.
Youngstown State got the potential tying run on with two outs in the ninth when Dylan Carpenter reached on a fielding error, but BGSU's Nathan Lohmeier got pinch-hitter Andre Good to ground out to end the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Blaze Glenn and Padraig O'Shaughnessy hit back-to-back one-out singles. After tagging for third on a flyout to right field by Steven D'Eusanio, Glenn scored on a throwing error by BGSU second baseman Mason Montgomery for YSU's only run.
Each team had six hits in the contest. Glenn and Padraig O'Shaughnessy each had two hits to pace the Penguins while six different Falcons recorded a hit.
Bowling Green starter Rigo Ramos allowed only the unearned run in the fourth on three hits while fanning four over five innings in a no decision. David Stopp, one of five BGSU pitchers, was awarded the victory after tossing a perfect seventh inning and Lohmeier earned a four-out save.
Marshalwitz suffered the loss for the Penguins after allowing one run on one hit over one third of an inning. Dalton Earich did not allow a hit over 1.1 innings of relief.
